Compounds include carbamate derivatives of vitamin D including vitamin D 3 and vitamin D 2 . The compounds are useful in methods and kits for determining the presence and/or amount of vitamin D including vitamin D analogs and metabolites thereof in a sample suspected of containing the same.

What is claimed is: 1. A compound of the formula: wherein: Z is an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, which may be unsubstituted or one or more of which may be substituted by one or more of hydroxy, lower alkoxy, oxo, and oxime; R is —O-succinimidyl; and R 4 is H, OH or lower alkoxy. 2. The compound according to claim 1 wherein Z is a branched alkyl group or a branched alkenyl group having 4 to 10 carbon atoms wherein a terminal carbon atom of the branched alkyl group or the branched alkenyl group comprises a hydroxyl. 3. A compound of the formula: or a compound of the formula: wherein: R′ is —O-succinimidyl; R l is H, OH, or protected OH; and R 4 is H, OH or lower alkoxy.
