Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle includes a mounting portion mountable at a side of a vehicle, a mirror head portion adjustably mounted at the mounting portion, and a reflective element at the mirror head portion. An actuator is operable to impart pivotal movement of the mirror head portion relative to the mounting portion and about a generally vertical pivot axis to pivotally adjust the mirror head portion relative to the side of the vehicle at which the mounting portion is mounted. The actuator comprises at least two motors and the motors are operable in tandem to cooperatively rotatably drive a common gear of a gear system to pivot the mirror head portion relative to the mounting portion. Responsive to a determination of the rotational movement being below a threshold speed, a shutoff circuit deactivates at least one of the motors irrespective of current draw by the motor.

The invention claimed is: 1. An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said exterior rearview mirror assembly comprising: a mounting portion mountable at a side of a vehicle; a mirror head portion adjustably mounted at said mounting portion; a reflective element at said mirror head portion; an actuator operable to impart pivotal movement of said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion and about a generally vertical pivot axis to pivotally adjust said mirror head portion relative to the side of the vehicle at which said mounting portion is mounted; wherein said actuator comprises at least two motors and wherein said at least two motors are operable in tandem to cooperatively rotatably drive a common drive gear of a gear system to pivot said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion; wherein said common drive gear is interconnected with an attaching portion of said actuator that attaches at one of said mirror head portion and said mounting portion, and wherein rotation of said common drive gear imparts a rotation of said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion; wherein output speeds of said at least two motors are synchronized; and wherein, during operation of said actuator, a shutoff circuit is operable to determine rotational movement of a motor output shaft of at least one of said motors and, responsive to a determination of the rotational movement being below a threshold speed, said shutoff circuit deactivates said at least one of said motors irrespective of current draw by said at least one of said motors. 2. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least two motors comprise first and second motors, with said first motor having a first output gear that engages said common drive gear and with said second motor having a second output gear that engages said common drive gear. 3. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 2 , wherein said first and second output gears comprise worm gears disposed at output shafts of said first and second motors. 4. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 3 , wherein said first and second output gears are arranged generally parallel to one another and engage teeth of said common drive gear at opposite sides of said common drive gear. 5. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 2 , wherein said common drive gear is interconnected with a worm gear that rotates with said common drive gear, and wherein said worm gear engages another drive gear that is interconnected with an attaching portion of said actuator that attaches at one of said mirror head portion and said mounting portion, and wherein rotation of said other drive gear imparts a rotation of said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion. 6. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least two motors comprise first and second motors, with said first motor having a first output gear that engages a first gear element that rotatably drives said common drive gear and with said second motor having a second output gear that rotatably drives a second gear element that engages said common drive gear. 7. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first gear element is interconnected with a first worm gear that rotates with said first gear element, and wherein said first worm gear engages said common drive gear and wherein said second gear element is interconnected with a second worm gear that rotates with said second gear element, and wherein said second worm gear engages said common drive gear. 8. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 7 , wherein said first and second worm gears engage said common drive gear at diametrically opposite portions of said common drive gear. 9. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein, during operation of said actuator, said shutoff circuit determines rotational movement of the motor output shaft of both of said motors and, responsive to a determination of the rotational movement being below a threshold speed, said shutoff circuit deactivates said motors irrespective of current draw by said motors. 10. An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said exterior rearview mirror assembly comprising: a mounting portion mountable at a side of a vehicle; a mirror head portion adjustably mounted at said mounting portion; a reflective element at said mirror head portion; an actuator operable to impart pivotal movement of said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion and about a generally vertical pivot axis to pivotally adjust said mirror head portion relative to the side of the vehicle at which said mounting portion is mounted; wherein said actuator comprises a first motor and a second motor and wherein said first and second motors are operable in tandem to cooperatively rotatably drive a drive gear of a gear system to pivot said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion; wherein said drive gear is interconnected with an attaching portion of said actuator that attaches at one of said mirror head portion and said mounting portion, and wherein rotation of said drive gear imparts a rotation of said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion; wherein output speeds of said first and second motors are synchronized; wherein, during operation of said actuator, a shutoff circuit is operable to determine rotational movement of a first motor output shaft of said first motor; wherein, responsive to a determination by said shutoff circuit that the rotational movement of said first motor output shaft of said first motor is below a threshold speed, said shutoff circuit deactivates said first motor irrespective of current draw by said first motor; and wherein, responsive to a determination by said shutoff circuit that the rotational movement of said first motor output shaft of said first motor is above a threshold speed, said shutoff circuit allows said first motor to continue to operate irrespective of current draw by said first motor. 11. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 10 , wherein said first motor rotatably drives, via said first motor output shaft, a first output gear that engages said drive gear and said second motor rotatably drives, via a second motor output shaft, a second output gear that engages said drive gear. 12. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 11 , wherein said first and second output gears comprise worm gears disposed at output shafts of said first and second motors. 13. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 12 , wherein said first and second output gears are arranged generally parallel to one another and engage teeth of said drive gear at opposite sides of said drive gear. 14. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 11 , wherein said drive gear is interconnected with a worm gear that rotates with said drive gear, and wherein said worm gear engages another drive gear that is interconnected with an attaching portion of said actuator that attaches at one of said mirror head portion and said mounting portion, and wherein rotation of said other drive gear imparts a rotation of said mirror head portion relative to said mounting portion. 15. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 10 , wherein said shutoff circuit comprises a delay element and wherein, when the rotational movement of said first motor output shaft of said first motor is determined to be above the threshold speed, said delay element is reset and said first motor continues to operate, and wherein, when the rotational movement of said first motor output shaft of said first motor is deter
