Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An abrasive grain is disclosed and may include a body. The body may define a length (l), a height (h), and a width (w). In a particular aspect, the length is greater than or equal to the height and the height is greater than or equal to the width. Further, in a particular aspect, the body may include a primary aspect ratio defined by the ratio of length:height of at least about 2:1. The body may also include an upright orientation probability of at least about 50%.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A shaped abrasive particle comprising: a body having a length (l), a width (w), and a height (h), wherein the body comprises a base surface, an upper surface, and a side surface extending between the base surface and the upper surface, wherein the base surface comprises a cross shape, and wherein the upper surface comprises a different shape compared to the base surface. 2. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the shape of the upper surface is selected from the group consisting of a three-pointed star, a four pointed star, a cross-shape, a polygon, ellipsoids, numerals, Greek alphabet characters, Latin alphabet characters, Russian alphabet characters, complex shapes having a combination of polygonal shapes, and a combination thereof. 3. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface comprises a rounded quadrilateral shape. 4. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 3 , wherein the rounded quadrilateral shape comprises rounded corners, and wherein the rounded corners are positioned between the arms of the cross shape of the base surface. 5. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface comprises undulations. 6. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the base surface defines a cross shape having four arms extending from a central portion, and wherein at least one of the arms comprises a width at a midpoint of the length of the arm that is less than a width of the arm at the central portion. 7. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 6 , wherein a first arm of the four arms comprises a first end width, and wherein the first end width is not greater than about 90% of the midpoint width. 8. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the side surface comprises a first section and a second section joined together at an interior angle, wherein the interior angle defines an angle greater than about 80 degrees. 9. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 8 , wherein the interior angle is not greater than about 130 degrees. 10. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 8 , wherein the interior angle is within a range between approximately 85 degrees and 100 degrees. 11. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the side surface comprises a fractured region intersecting at least a portion of the base surface. 12. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 11 , wherein the fractured region has a surface roughness greater than a surface roughness of the upper surface of the body. 13. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 11 , wherein the fractured region defines a portion of the body extending from the base surface, and wherein the fractured region defines a serrated edge. 14. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 11 , wherein the fractured region defines irregularly shaped protrusions and grooves extending along an edge of the base surface and the side surface. 15. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the cross shape comprises a first arm, a second arm, a third arm, and a fourth arm. 16. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 15 , wherein the first arm comprises a first arm shape, the second arm comprises a second arm shape, the third arm comprises a third arm shape, and the fourth arm comprises a fourth arm shape, and wherein the first arm shape is substantially different as compared to the second arm shape. 17. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 15 , wherein the first arm comprises an irregularly shaped contour. 18. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 15 , wherein the first arm comprises a length that is less than a width of the first arm. 19. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 18 , wherein the length is not greater than about 90% of the width of the first arm. 20. The shaped abrasive particle of claim 1 , wherein the body is adhered to a backing and is part of a coated abrasive article.
