Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Described herein are system(s), method(s), and apparatus for embedding personal video recorder functions at the picture level. In one embodiment, there is presented a computer readable medium for storing a data structure. The data structure comprises a picture header and at least one command following the picture header.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for processing video data, said apparatus comprising: a decoder system operable to decode the video data, said decoder system comprising: a controller operable to write at least one command into a group of pictures data structure, the at least one command affecting at least one of a playback speed of the video data, a playback direction of the video data, or both the playback speed of the video data and the playback direction of the video data; and a video decoder operably connected to the controller to execute the at least one command. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the group of pictures data structure comprises a picture header, and wherein the controller writes the at least one command after the picture header. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the group of pictures data structure comprises user data, said user data comprising a start code, a signature, and the at least one command. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein execution of the at least one command by the video decoder causes a rewind operation. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein execution of the at least one command by the video decoder causes a fast forward operation. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the video decoder decompresses the video data, said decoder system further comprising: a display engine operable connected to the video decoder to provide the decompressed video data for display. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the decoder system further comprises: a computer readable medium connected to the video decoder and storing a picture data structure corresponding to the group of pictures data structure, wherein said picture data structure comprises: a picture header; and at least one command following the picture header. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the picture data structure comprises user data, and wherein the user data comprises the at least one command. 9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the user data immediately follows the picture header. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the user data comprises a user data start code and a signature. 11. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the picture data structure comprises a picture payload, said picture payload following the at least one command. 12. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one command is for a rewind function. 13. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the at least one command is for a fast forward function. 14. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the data structure further comprises: a picture payload following the user data. 15. A method for processing video data in a decoder system, comprising the steps of: writing via a video controller at least one command into a group of pictures data structure, the at least one command affecting at least one of a playback speed of the video data, a playback direction of the video data, or both the playback speed of the video data and the playback direction of the video data; and executing, in a video decoder, the at least one command. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the group of pictures data structure comprises a picture header, and the method further comprises the step of writing, via the video controller, the at least one command following the picture header. 17. The method of claim 15 , wherein execution of the at least one command by the video decoder causes a rewind operation. 18. The method of claim 15 , wherein execution of the at least one command by the video decoder causes a fast forward operation. 19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the group of pictures data structure further comprises at least one picture data structure, wherein the picture data structure comprises: at least one picture header; and at least one command following the picture header. 20. A system for processing video data, comprising: means for writing at least one command into a group of pictures data structure, the at least one command affecting at least one of a playback speed of the video data, a playback direction of the video data, or both the playback speed of the video data and the playback direction of the video data; and means for executing the at least one command.
