Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various systems, methods, and programs embodied in computer-readable mediums are provided for determining sizes of packaging in a packaging suite employed in a materials handling environment. The packaging may be used, for example, in the shipping of items from the materials handling environment to various destinations. The sizes of the packaging in the packaging suite are determined based at least in part upon the three-dimensional bounding boxes associated with packages or shipments shipped or planned to be shipped from the materials handling environment.

Therefore, having thus described the invention, at least the following is claimed: 1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying at least one program executable in at least one computing device, the at least one program having a plurality of instructions that perform a method comprising: receiving, by the at least one computing device, data describing a plurality of shipments, individual ones of the plurality of shipments corresponding to an item collection that has been shipped, or is planned to be shipped, in a single respective package from a materials handling environment; determining, by the at least one computing device, for the individual ones of the plurality of shipments, a corresponding one of a plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes, wherein the corresponding one of the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes encloses the corresponding item collection; and generating, by the at least one computing device, a packaging suite from the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes determined for the plurality of shipments, the packaging suite specifying a plurality of different sizes of packaging that are to be employed in the materials handling environment for future shipments originating from the materials handling environment, wherein the plurality of different sizes of packaging in the packaging suite are determined without regard to predetermined sizes of packaging. 2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises causing, by the at least one computing device, the packaging suite to be regenerated for a different plurality of shipments, wherein the plurality of different sizes of packaging changes upon regeneration. 3. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes differ from one another. 4. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the item collection has been shipped, or is planned to be shipped, to a single respective customer. 5. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the packaging suite is generated based at least in part on a predefined number of different sizes of packaging. 6. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the packaging suite is determined to minimize a wasted volume in the plurality of different sizes of packaging for the future shipments. 7. A system, comprising: at least one computing device configured to perform a method comprising: receiving, by the at least one computing device, data describing a plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes, individual ones of the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes enclosing a corresponding one of a plurality of item collections that has been shipped, or is planned to be shipped, to a single respective customer from a materials handling environment; and determining, by the at least one computing device, a packaging suite from the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes, the packaging suite specifying a plurality of different sizes of packaging that are to be employed in the materials handling environment for future shipments originating from the materials handling environment, wherein the plurality of different sizes of packaging in the packaging suite are determined without regard to predetermined sizes of packaging. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises generating, by the at least one computing device, the data describing the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes from data describing the plurality of item collections. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises periodically regenerating, by the at least one computing device, the data describing the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes based at least in part on data describing a different plurality of item collections. 10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the packaging suite is determined based at least in part on a plurality of three-dimensional buffering spaces corresponding to the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes. 11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the packaging suite is determined based at least in part on a predefined number of different sizes of packaging. 12. The system of claim 7 , wherein at least some of the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes differ from one another. 13. The system of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises causing, by the at least one computing device, at least one packaging machine to generate packaging in the plurality of different sizes of packaging in response to determining the packaging suite. 14. A method, comprising: receiving, via at least one computing device, data describing a plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes, individual ones of the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes enclosing a corresponding one of a plurality of item collections that has been shipped, or is planned to be shipped, to a single respective customer from a materials handling environment; determining, via the at least one computing device, a packaging suite specifying a plurality of different sizes of packaging that are to be employed in the materials handling environment for future shipments originating from the materials handling environment, the plurality of different sizes of packaging being determined based at least in part on the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes: and causing, via the at least one computing device, at least one packaging machine to generate packaging in the plurality of different sizes of packaging in response to determining the packaging suite. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the corresponding one of the plurality of item collections has been shipped, or is planned to be shipped, in a single respective package. 16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising causing, via the at least one computing device, the plurality of different sizes of packaging to be transmitted to a packaging supplier. 17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: determining, via the at least one computing device, a period of time; and requesting, via the at least one computing device, the data describing the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes based at least in part on the period of time. 18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising generating, via the at least one computing device, the data describing the plurality of three-dimensional bounding boxes based at least in part on data describing the plurality of item collections. 19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of different sizes of packaging are determined further based at least in part on a corresponding plurality of three-dimensional buffering spaces. 20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of different sizes of packaging in the packaging suite are determined without regard to predetermined sizes of packaging.
