A PTO transmission system in a vehicle for transmitting power to a PTO shaft driving an implement comprises a planetary drive unit having first and second input and output coupled to the PTO shaft. The first and second input are coupled to an output shaft of the vehicle engine and to an output shaft of a drive motor, respectively. A control system controls the transfer of power from a power source to the drive motor. The power source is a variable power generating source driven by the PTO shaft. The drive motor is configured and adapted to decrease or increase the rotational speed of the output of the planetary drive unit on an increase or decrease of the power transferred to it, respectively.

The invention claimed is: 1. A PTO transmission system in a work vehicle for transmitting power to a PTO shaft driving an implement, the vehicle comprising an engine and ground drive wheels driven by a main transmission comprising a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a powershift transmission; the PTO transmission system comprising: a planetary drive unit having a first and second input and output, the first input being adapted to be coupled to an output shaft of the engine, the second input being adapted to be coupled to an output shaft of a drive motor and the output being adapted to be coupled to the PTO shaft; a control system operable to control the engine rpm, the transmission ratio of the transmission and the drive motor; an engine speed sensor and a PTO shaft speed sensor, operable to measure engine speed and PTO shaft speed respectively, and coupled to the control system; a target PTO speed; and wherein the control system is operable to control the engine rpm, the gear ratio of the transmission and the drive motor to obtain a PTO output shaft speed corresponding to the target PTO speed such that the control system includes a plurality of working modes in which to select the target PTO speed, and wherein in at least one selected working mode: the target PTO speed is determined as a function of at least one of: a GPS map and an ISOBUS request, the wheel speed is selected by at least one of: operator and control system; and thereafter, the control system automatically controls engine speed, and the control system automatically selects at least one selectable gear of selectable gears to maintain wheel speed. 2. The PTO transmission system according to claim 1 , wherein the control system is operable to automatically reduce the target PTO speed on a sudden increase of the load on the engine to avoid stall, when the engine rpm is below a threshold value. 3. The PTO transmission system according to claim 2 , wherein the control system is operable to control the engine rpm and the transmission ratio to resulting in at least one of (a) minimizing input from the drive motor and (b) minimizing engine fuel consumption. 4. The PTO transmission system according to claim 3 , wherein the system further comprises an actuable selector coupled to the control system and operable to select the working mode. 5. The PTO transmission system according to claim 4 , wherein the drive motor is a hydraulic motor and the variable power source is a variable hydraulic pump working together as a hydrostatic unit, the hydraulic pump being driven by the PTO output shaft or the engine output shaft.
