The present invention relates to compositions and methods for the treatment of infection by enveloped viruses, such as Ebola and Lassa fever viruses.

A compound represented by formula II: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, solvate, hydrate, chemically-protected form, enantiomer or stereoisomer thereof; wherein, independently for each occurrence, L 1 is L 2 is l 1 is a bond to L 1 ; l 2 is a bond to L 2 ; a 1 is a bond to a 2 is a bond to a 3 is a bond to X is a bond, R 3 is hydrogen or alkyl; R 4 is hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl, or alkylcarbonyl; and R 5 is hydrogen, or alkyl, haloalkyl, or alkyl substituted with hydroxy, cyano, carboxy, aralkyloxy, alkyloxycarbonyl or aralkyloxycarbonyl; provided that the compound is not 2.
