Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A photovoltaic (PV) module framing and coupling system enables the attachment of PV modules to a roof or other mounting surface without requiring the use of separate structural support members which attach directly to and span between multiple PV modules in a formed PV array. The apparatus provides a parallel coupling for securely interlocking the outside surfaces of parallel frame members together in a side to side arrangement to form an array with improved structural load distribution. The coupling may attach to a slot in the frame at substantially any position along the length of the frame thereby enabling the interconnection of adjacent PV modules along both an x and y axis. The apparatus may further provide a rotating portion and locking portion, mounting brackets for direct connection to a mounting surface, grounding teeth, and a twist-lock engagement means for interlocking and aligning PV modules in the array.

What is claimed as invention is: 1. A photovoltaic assembly, comprising: (a) a first photovoltaic module having a side groove with upper and lower flanges; (b) a second photovoltaic module having a side groove with upper and lower flanges; and (c) a photovoltaic module coupling connecting the first photovoltaic module to the second photovoltaic module, the coupling comprising: (i) a center rotating portion; (ii) a first locking portion extending from one side of the center rotating portion, the first locking portion being dimensioned to be received into the side groove in the first photovoltaic module; and (iii) a second rotating locking portion extending from an opposite side of the center rotating portion, the second locking portion being dimensioned to be received into the side groove in the second photovoltaic module, wherein the first and second locking portions are shaped differently from one another such that only the first locking portion locks into the outward facing groove in the first photovoltaic module when the center rotating portion is rotated from a first position to a second position, but wherein both the first and second locking portions lock into the outward facing grooves in the first and second photovoltaic modules when the center rotating portion is rotated from the second position to a third position, and wherein the first locking portion is dimensioned to pass between the upper and lower flanges in the side groove in the first photovoltaic module in the first position but not in the second or third positions when the first locking portion is inserted into the side groove in the first photovoltaic module in a direction perpendicular to the length of the side groove in the first photovoltaic module, and wherein the second locking portion is dimensioned to pass between the upper and lower flanges in the side groove in the second photovoltaic module in the first and second positions but not in the third position when the second locking portion is inserted into the side groove in the second photovoltaic module in a direction perpendicular to the length of the side groove in the second photovoltaic module. 2. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein the first and second positions are forty-five degrees apart and the first and third positions are ninety degrees apart. 3. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein the second locking portion has clearance zones directly opposite to curved surfaces on the first locking portion. 4. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second locking portions have a pair of diagonally opposite corners that are right angled and a pair of diagonally opposite corners that are curved or cut away. 5. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second locking portions have a pair of diagonally opposite corners that are curved and the second locking portion has a pair of diagonally opposite corners that are cut away. 6. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein the second locking portion is smaller than the first locking portion. 7. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein the second locking portion is dimensioned to be inserted into the side groove in the second photovoltaic module after the first portion has already been locked into the side groove in the first photovoltaic module. 8. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein: both the first and second locking portions are dimensioned to be inserted into the side grooves in the photovoltaic modules when the center portion is in the first position, the second portion is dimensioned to be inserted into the side grooves in the second photovoltaic module and the first portion is locked into the side groove in the first photovoltaic module when the center portion is in the second position, and both the first and second locking portions are locked into the side grooves in the photovoltaic modules when the center portion is in the third position. 9. The coupling of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second locking portions are mounted on shafts extending from the center rotating portion. 10. A coupling for connecting an outward facing flanged groove of a first photovoltaic module to an outward facing flanged groove of a second photovoltaic module, wherein: said coupling comprises: (i) a center rotating portion, (ii) a first locking portion extending from one side of the center rotating portion, and (iii) a second locking portion extending from an opposite side of the center rotating portion, each of the first and second locking portions having a length along a radially extending portion and a width across said radially extending portion, said length extending substantially longer than said width and aligning in a substantially parallel manner with a longest dimension of one of said outward facing flanged grooves in an insertion position, and wherein only the first locking portion locks into said one of the outward facing grooves when the center rotating portion is rotated from a first position to a second position, but wherein both the first and second locking portions lock into the outward facing flanged grooves when the center rotating portion is rotated from the second position to a third position, and wherein the first locking portion is dimensioned to be received between upper and lower flanges in the outward facing flanged groove in the first photovoltaic module in the first position but not in the second or third positions when the first locking portion is inserted into the outward facing flanged groove in the first photovoltaic module in a direction perpendicular to the length of the outward facing flanged groove in the first photovoltaic module, and wherein the second locking portion is dimensioned to be received between upper and lower flanges in the outward facing flanged groove in the second photovoltaic module in the first and second positions but not in the third position when the second locking portion is inserted into the outward facing flanged groove in the second photovoltaic module in a direction perpendicular to the length of the outward facing flanged groove in the second photovoltaic module. 11. A coupling according to claim 10 , wherein said first locking portion comprises two curved surfaces on opposite corners. 12. A coupling according to claim 10 , wherein said outward facing flanged grooves are adapted to receive said first or second locking portions in said insertion position at substantially any point along said outward facing flanged grooves. 13. A coupling according to claim 10 , wherein said outward facing flanged grooves extends substantially along a length of a frame member of said first and second photovoltaic modules.
