Described is the preparation of sulfonated polyoxadiazole polymers with a high degree of sulfonation and good flammability properties. The polymers are useful in articles such as fibers.

A process for preparing a polymer, comprising the steps of: a) combining hydrazine, oleum, 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid, to form a reaction mixture, wherein i) the oleum is added in an amount of at least about 4 molar equivalents of SO 3 based on the number of moles of hydrazine, ii) the oleum is added in one step, and iii) the reaction mixture comprises about 1 molar % to about 50 molar % of 2,6-naphthalene…
