Nanocomposite materials and methods of making composite materials reinforced with carbon nanotubes are disclosed. The composite material includes an array of functionalized and aligned carbon nanotubes having a degree of functionalization of about 1% to about 10%; and a polymeric matrix material bonded to the array of functionalized and aligned carbon nanotubes.

A method for making a composite material comprising: functionalizing a sheet of carbon nanotubes to produce a sheet of functionalized carbon nanotubes having a degree of functionalization between about 1% to about 10%; aligning the carbon nanotubes; and, thereafter impregnating the sheet of functionalized and aligned carbon nanotubes with a matrix material and allowing the sheet of functionalized and aligned carbon nanotubes to bond with the matrix material.…
