This document provides aquaretic and natriuretic polypeptides. For example, this document provides polypeptides having aquaretic and/or natriuretic activities. In some cases, a polypeptide provided herein can have aquaretic and natriuretic activities, while lacking the ability to lower blood pressure. This document also provides methods and materials for inducing aquaretic and/or natriuretic activities within a mammal.

What is claimed is: 1. A natriuretic polypeptide less than 45 amino acid residues in length, wherein said polypeptide comprises, in an order from amino terminus to carboxy terminus: (a) the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:2, and (b) the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:3. 2. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide has natriuretic activity. 3. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide lacks vasodilatory activity. 4. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide lacks the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1. 5. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide comprises the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:8. 6. The polypeptide of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide consists of the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:8. 7. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a natriuretic polypeptide less than 45 amino acid residues in length, wherein said polypeptide comprises, in an order from amino terminus to carboxy terminus: (a) the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:2, and (b) the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:3. 8. A method for increasing aquaretic and natriuretic activity within a mammal without lowering blood pressure, wherein said method comprises administering to said mammal a natriuretic polypeptide less than 45 amino acid residues in length, wherein said polypeptide comprises, in an order from amino terminus to carboxy terminus: (a) the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:2, and (b) the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:3. 9. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide has natriuretic activity. 10. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide lacks vasodilatory activity. 11. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide lacks the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1. 12. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide comprises the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:8. 13. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide consists of the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:8. 14. The method of claim 8 , wherein said polypeptide lacks the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1. 15. The method of claim 8 , wherein said polypeptide comprises the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:8. 16. The method of claim 8 , wherein said polypeptide consists of the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:8.
