Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A saw assembly includes a drive member, a motor, a housing, and a guard. The drive member is configured to be moved in a repeating pattern. The motor is configured to move the drive member in the repeating pattern. The housing defines an interior space in which the motor is positioned. The guard is secured to the housing and includes a partition. The guard defines (i) a first cutting wheel space positioned on a first side of the partition, and (ii) a second cutting wheel space positioned on an opposite second side of the partition.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A saw assembly, comprising: a drive member configured to be moved in a repeating pattern; a motor configured to move said drive member in said repeating pattern; a housing defining an interior space in which said motor is positioned; a guard secured to said housing and including a partition, said guard defining a first cutting wheel space positioned on a first side of said partition; and a flange configured (i) to project from said partition, and (ii) to define a second cutting wheel space positioned on an opposite second side of said partition, wherein said housing includes a wall portion, wherein said first cutting wheel space is interposed between said wall portion and said partition, wherein said guard further includes a concave structure defining a protected space, wherein said partition is secured to said concave structure so as to divide said protected space into said first cutting wheel space and said second cutting wheel space, and wherein said wall portion, said concave structure, and said partition are integrally molded together as a single part. 2. The saw assembly of claim 1 , further comprising: a first cutting wheel configured to be mounted to said drive member, said first cutting wheel having a flat hub portion and a first cutting structure; and a second cutting wheel configured to be mounted to said drive member, said second cutting wheel having a domed hub portion and second cutting structure, wherein, when said first cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said first cutting structure is at least partially positioned in said first cutting wheel space, and wherein, when said second cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said second cutting structure is at least partially positioned in said second cutting wheel space. 3. The saw assembly of claim 2 , wherein: said drive member includes an output shaft defining an axis, said motor is configured to rotate said output shaft about said axis, when said first cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said motor is configured to rotate said first cutting wheel about said axis so that said first cutting structure is advanced through said first cutting wheel space, and when said second cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said motor is configured to rotate said second cutting wheel about said axis so that said second cutting structure is advanced through said second cutting wheel space. 4. The saw assembly of claim 1 , wherein: said drive member includes an output shaft defining an axis, and said motor is configured to rotate said output shaft about said axis. 5. The saw assembly of claim 4 , further comprising a foot having a work piece contact surface, wherein: said work piece contact surface lies in a first plane, and said axis is substantially parallel to said first plane. 6. The saw assembly of claim 5 , wherein: a second plane that intersects said axis is parallel to said first plane, said second plane intersects said partition at (i) a leading portion of said partition that is located in front of said axis in relation to a forward movement of said saw assembly so as to define a leading intersection distance, and (ii) a trailing portion of said partition that is located behind said axis in relation to said forward movement of said saw assembly so as to define a trailing intersection distance, and said leading intersection distance is less than said trailing intersection distance. 7. The saw assembly of claim 5 , wherein: a second plane that intersects said axis is parallel to said first plane, said second plane intersects said partition at at least one of (i) a leading portion of said partition that is located in front of said axis in relation to a forward movement of said saw assembly, and (ii) a trailing portion of said partition that is located behind said axis in relation to said forward movement of said saw assembly, a leading intersection distance is defined by the amount of intersection of said second plane with said leading portion of said partition, a trailing intersection distance is defined by the amount of intersection of said second plane with said trailing portion of said partition, and said leading intersection distance is less than said trailing intersection distance. 8. A saw assembly, comprising: a drive member configured to be rotated in a repeating pattern about an axis; a motor configured to rotate said drive member in said repeating pattern; a housing defining an interior space in which said motor is positioned; and a guard secured to said housing, said guard including (i) a concave structure defining a protected space, and (ii) a partition secured to said concave structure within said protected space so as to define a first cutting wheel space on a first side of said partition and a second cutting wheel space on an opposite second side of said partition, wherein a first plane intersects said axis and intersects said partition at at least one of (i) a leading portion of said partition that is located in front of said axis in relation to a forward movement of said saw assembly so as to define a leading intersection distance, and (ii) a trailing portion of said partition that is located behind said axis in relation to said forward movement of said saw assembly so as to define a trailing intersection distance, and wherein said leading intersection distance is less than said trailing intersection distance. 9. The saw assembly of claim 8 , wherein: said housing includes a wall portion, and said first cutting wheel space is interposed between said wall portion and said partition. 10. The saw assembly of claim 9 , wherein: said concave structure includes a flange that projects from said partition, and said flange defines said second cutting wheel space. 11. The saw assembly of claim 8 , wherein said concave structure, said partition, and at least part of said housing are integrally molded together as a single part. 12. The saw assembly of claim 8 , further comprising: a first cutting wheel configured to be mounted to said drive member, said first cutting wheel having a flat hub portion and a first cutting structure; and a second cutting wheel configured to be mounted to said drive member, said second cutting wheel having a domed hub portion and second cutting structure, wherein, when said first cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said first cutting structure is at least partially positioned in said first cutting wheel space, and wherein, when said second cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said second cutting structure is at least partially positioned in said second cutting wheel space. 13. The saw assembly of claim 12 , wherein: when said first cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said motor is configured to rotate said first cutting wheel so that said first cutting structure is advanced through said first cutting wheel space, and when said second cutting wheel is mounted to said drive member, said motor is configured to rotate said second cutting wheel so that said second cutting structure is advanced through said second cutting wheel space. 14. The saw assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a foot having a work piece contact surface, wherein: said work piece contact surface lies in a second plane, said axis is substantially parallel to said second plane, and said second plane is parallel to said first plane. 15.
