Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The invention is directed to a ventilation control system for controlling the ventilation of a patient. The ventilation control system utilizes a user-friendly user interface for the display of patient data and ventilator status, as well as for entering values for ventilation settings to be used to control the ventilator.

We claim: 1. A breathing assistance system, comprising: a controller configured to control a breathing assistance device to deliver gas to a patient based on a set of implemented ventilation parameters; a display configured to display proposed settings for a set of proposed but not implemented ventilation parameters; one or more settings adjustment interfaces configured to cooperate with the display to allow a user to (a) select a particular proposed ventilation parameter for adjustment of the corresponding proposed setting and (b) adjust the corresponding proposed setting for the selected proposed ventilation parameter, wherein after the proposed settings for one or more proposed ventilation parameters have been adjusted and are no longer selected for adjustment, the proposed settings that have been adjusted are displayed as visually distinguishable from proposed settings that have not been adjusted; and a settings accept interface configured to cooperate with the controller and the display to allow the user to accept the proposed settings for the set of proposed ventilation parameters such that the proposed ventilation parameters are implemented by the controller for controlling the breathing assistance device to deliver gas to the patient. 2. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein the proposed settings that have been adjusted are displayed using a first font, and the proposed settings that have not been adjusted are displayed using a second font different than the first font. 3. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein the proposed settings that have been adjusted are displayed using italics, and the proposed settings that have not been adjusted are not displayed using italics. 4. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein: the one or more settings adjustment interfaces comprises an interactive touch screen; and the settings accept interface comprises a manual control separate from the interactive touch screen. 5. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , further comprising a proceed interface configured to allow the user to approve of the proposed settings before implementing the proposed settings using the settings accept interface. 6. The breathing assistance system according to claim 5 , wherein, if one or more proposed settings are adjusted by the user, the settings accept interface is deactivated until the user interacts with the proceed interface to approve of the proposed settings. 7. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein the set of proposed but not implemented ventilation parameters includes one or more different parameters than the set of implemented ventilation parameters. 8. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein the set of proposed but not implemented ventilation parameters includes the same parameters as the set of implemented ventilation parameters. 9. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein the set of implemented ventilation parameters corresponds to a first ventilation mode, and the set of proposed but not implemented ventilation parameters corresponds to a second ventilation mode. 10. The breathing assistance system according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more settings adjustment interfaces include: one or more parameter selection interfaces allowing the user to select a particular proposed parameter to adjust; and an adjustment interface allowing the user to adjust the proposed setting of the selected proposed parameter. 11. The breathing assistance system according to claim 10 , wherein: the one or more parameter selection interfaces comprise graphical representations displayed on a touch screen; and the adjustment interface comprises a manually adjustable device separate from the touch screen. 12. The breathing assistance system according to claim 10 , wherein: the one or more parameter selection interfaces comprise graphical representations displayed on a touch screen, each graphical representation corresponding to a proposed parameter; and using the touch screen to select a particular graphical representation causes the particular graphical representation to change appearance to indicate that the corresponding proposed parameter has been selected for adjustment. 13. The breathing assistance system according to claim 12 , wherein: the particular graphical representation comprises a representation of a button; and causing the particular graphical representation to change appearance to indicate that the corresponding proposed parameter has been selected for adjustment comprises causing the button to appear depressed. 14. A method, comprising: controlling a breathing assistance device to deliver gas to a patient according to a set of implemented ventilation parameters; displaying to a user via a physical display device proposed settings for a set of proposed but not implemented ventilation parameters; receiving input from the user for (a) selecting a particular proposed ventilation parameter for adjustment of the corresponding proposed setting and (b) adjusting the corresponding proposed setting for the selected proposed ventilation parameter; after the proposed settings for one or more proposed ventilation parameters have been adjusted and are no longer selected for adjustment, displaying the proposed settings that have been adjusted as visually distinguishable from proposed settings that have not been adjusted; receiving input from the user for implementing the proposed settings for the set of proposed ventilation parameters; and implementing the proposed ventilation parameters such that the breathing assistance device delivers gas to the patient according to the implemented proposed ventilation parameters. 15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein displaying proposed settings that have been adjusted as visually distinguishable from proposed settings that have not been adjusted comprises displaying proposed settings that have been adjusted using a first font, and displaying proposed settings that have not been adjusted using a second font different than the first font. 16. The method according to claim 14 , wherein displaying proposed settings that have been adjusted as visually distinguishable from proposed settings that have not been adjusted comprises displaying proposed settings that have been adjusted using italics, and displaying proposed settings that have not been adjusted without using italics. 17. The method according to claim 14 , wherein: receiving input from the user for adjusting the proposed settings comprises receiving input via an interactive touch screen; and receiving input from the user for implementing the proposed settings comprises receiving input via a manual control separate from the interactive touch screen. 18. The method according to claim 14 , further comprising receiving input from the user for approving the proposed settings before receiving input from the user for implementing the proposed settings. 19. The method according to claim 18 , further comprising: deactivating the settings accept interface in response to receiving input to adjust one or more proposed settings; and activating the settings accept interface in response to receiving input from the user for approving the proposed settings. 20. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the set of proposed but not implemented ventilation parameters includes one or more different parameters than the set of implemented venti
