Various aspects and attributes of a single-click list selection user interface are described herein. A user can toggle the list inclusion status of any item by single clicking on the item in a selection pane of the user interface. When the user single-clicks a storage container item, the selection pane navigates to and displays items in the selected storage container. In order to prevent inadvertent selections, the user interface may provide graphical feedback indicating the inclusion status of an item prior to the user single clicking that item, e.g., responsive to mouse hover over that item. The user interface may further include a list pane which displays all items presently included in the list, regardless of each item's original storage container.

We claim: 1. A method of data navigation and item selection using a single-click user interface, comprising: displaying a user interface window on a display screen, the user interface window comprising a selection pane for displaying a plurality of selectable items including at least one storage location item and at least one discrete item, and further comprising a list pane for displaying discrete items included within a list; receiving a user-initiated, single-selection touch action on a discrete item or on a storage location item, wherein a result of performing the single-selection action differs according to a type and a status of an item receiving the single-selection touch action; when the single-selection touch action consists of a touch directed to the discrete item that is presently excluded from the list, changing the status of the discrete item to inclusion in the list, highlighting the discrete item within the selection pane, and adding a representation of the discrete item to the list pane; when the single-selection touch action consists of a touch directed to the discrete item that is presently included in the list, changing the status of the discrete item to exclusion from the list, removing the highlighting on the discrete item within the selection pane, and removing a representation of the discrete item from the list pane; when the single-selection touch action consists of a touch directed to the storage location item, navigating the selection pane to a storage location corresponding to the storage location item, wherein the discrete item and the storage location item are selectable within, at least, the selection pane; prior to the single-selection touch action, identifying a hover over the item in the selection pane; and indicating the resulting effect on the item of a user applying the single-selection touch action in response to the hover. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying highlighting associated with a graphical indication of the discrete item when the discrete item is included within the list. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein indicating the resulting effect on the item in response to the hover includes modifying a graphical depiction of an input pointer. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein modifying the graphical depiction of the input pointer is performed upon the input pointer hovering over the discrete item for a predetermined amount of time. 5. The method of claim 1 , each discrete item comprises a digital image, and the list is a virtual photo album. 6. The method of claim 1 , each discrete item comprises an audio file, and the list is a playlist. 7. The method of claim 1 , each discrete item is selectable by an application program, wherein the method further comprises: displaying the user interface is initiated as a result of the application program requesting a common file dialog; and upon receiving user input indicating the list contents are accepted, sending the list contents to the application program as the output of the common file dialog. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising toggling the status of the discrete item upon receiving user input selecting a context menu item from a context menu corresponding to the discrete item. 9. The method of claim 1 , where the at least one storage container item comprises a virtual folder defined by a user-specified query. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising varying the display of a graphical indication of the storage location item based in part on whether at least one discrete item stored within the storage location item is in the list, wherein varying the display comprising: providing a first highlighting in association with the graphical indication of the storage location item when all items in and beneath a folder represented by the storage location item are within the list; and providing a second highlighting in association with the graphical indication of the storage location item when one or more but not all items in and beneath a folder represented by the storage location item are within the list. 11. A computer readable medium storing computer executable instructions for providing a user interface allowing a user to select contents of a list, the user interface comprising: an item selection pane displaying a plurality of items, the plurality of items comprising at least one container item and at least one discrete item capable of being included in the list; a list pane displaying contents of a list; and a pointer controlled by a user-input device, the pointer for pointing to, hovering, and selecting any of the plurality of items by way of a single-click selection action, wherein a pre-selection indicator is provided on a specific item of the plurality of items in response to hovering over the specific item indicative of the resulting effect on the item of performing the selection action, and a result of performing the selection action differs according to a type and a status of an item receiving the selection action, when the single-click selection action consists of a single click directed to a discrete item that is presently excluded from the list, changing the status of the discrete item to inclusion in the list, highlighting the discrete item within the selection pane, and adding a representation of the discrete item to the list pane, when the single-click selection action consists of a single click directed to the discrete item that is presently included in the list, changing the status of the discrete item to exclusion from the list, removing the highlighting on the discrete item within the selection pane, and removing a representation of the discrete item from the list pane, and when the single-click selection action consists of a single click directed to a container item, navigating the selection pane to a container corresponding to the container item. 12. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , the user interface alters the appearance of the pointer to identify a next task associated with the single-action selection action of the discrete item upon the user pointing the pointer at the discrete item. 13. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , each discrete item comprises a digital image, and the list is a virtual photo album. 14. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , each discrete item comprises an audio file, and the list is a playlist. 15. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , the user interface further comprises a user-selectable element to indicate that the list contents are accepted, each discrete item comprises an item usable by an application program, and the computer readable medium further stores computer executable instructions for performing a method comprising: responsive to receiving a request from the application program for a common file dialog, launching the user interface; and responsive to receiving user input selecting the user-selectable element to indicate that the list contents are accepted, providing to the application program an indication of the list contents. 16. The computer readable medium of claim 15 , the indication of the list contents provided to the application program comprises a link or shortcut to each item in the list. 17. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , the user interface further comprising a view slider, upon interaction with a user, to change a size of thumbnail images representing one or more of the plurality of displayed in the item selection pane or the list pane. 18.
