Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A filter element is provided with a snorkel that facilitates bleeding of air along the outside periphery of a tubular filter media pack to a bleed chamber contained within the filter element. This may be employed in fuel filtration applications during installation and removal of filter elements whereby air can be temporarily trapped in a housing containing the filter element. The snorkel thus vents the air along the outside of the filter element and then into a bleed chamber where it can be communicated to a standpipe having an isolated bleed passage.

What is claimed is: 1. A filter element, comprising: top and bottom end caps, the bottom end cap defining a central opening, a tubular ring of filter media extending between the top and bottom end caps, the tubular ring of filter media defining a central open volume, a bleed chamber defined proximate the bottom end cap, a snorkel in fluid communication with the bleed chamber and extending along the outside of the filter media with a vent opening closer to the top end cap than the bottom end cap; and further comprising first and second annular seals proximate the bottom end cap, the bleed chamber defined at least in part between the first and second annular seals. 2. The filter element of claim 1 , further comprising a support core disposed in the central open volume and extending between the top and bottom end caps, the first annular seal being of smaller diameter than the second annular seal, the first annular seal mounted to the support core and the second annular seal mounted to the bottom end cap. 3. The filter element of claim 2 , wherein the bottom end cap includes an annular channel having a bottom and a ring member spaced from the bottom providing a raised floor, with the bleed chamber being extended through a first aperture in the support core and into a space defined between the bottom and the ring member, the ring member including a spout to which the snorkel is mounted. 4. The filter element of claim 3 , wherein the bottom end cap includes an inner annular wall and an outer annular wall with a bottom wall radially extending between the inner annular wall and the outer annular wall, further comprising a third annular seal sealing between the support core and the inner annular wall and an second aperture in the inner annular wall to communicate the bleed chamber into said space. 5. The filter element of claim 4 , further comprising spacer elements extending between the bottom wall and the ring member, and snap retainers on at least one of the outside annular wall and inside annular wall and retaining the ring member against the spacer elements, further comprising potting compound between the ring member and a bottom end of the filter media sealing between cracks between the ring member and the inner and outer annular walls. 6. A filter element, comprising: top and bottom end caps, the bottom end cap defining a central opening, a tubular ring of filter media extending between the top and bottom en caps, the tubular ring of filter media defining central open volume, bleed chamber defined proximate the bottom end cap, a snorkel in fluid communication with the bleed chamber and extending along the outside of the filler media with a vent opening closer to the top end cap than the bottom end cap; and wherein the bleed chamber extends under a bottom end of the filter media, the bottom end cap further including a spout connecting the bleed chamber to the snorkel. 7. The filter element of claim 6 , wherein the snorkel comprises a vertically extending tube extending upwardly away from a spout. 8. A filter element, comprising: top and bottom end caps, the bottom end cap defining a central opening, a tubular ring of filter media extending between the top and bottom end caps, the tubular ring of filter media defining a central open volume, a bleed chamber defined proximate the bottom end cap, a snorkel in fluid communication with the bleed chamber and extending along the outside of the filler media with a vent opening closer to the top end cap than the bottom end cap; and wherein the tubular ring of filter media is a generally cylindrical pleat pack having pleats, the snorkel extending in a longitudinal gap between adjacent pleats along the outside and contained radially inward of outer peripheries of the top and bottom end caps. 9. A filter element, comprising: top and bottom end caps, the bottom end cap defining a central opening, a of filter media defining a central open volume, a bleed chamber defined proximate the bottom end cap, a snorkel in fluid communication with the bleed chamber and extending along the outside of the filter media with a vent opening closer to the top end cap than the bottom end cap; and wherein the top end cap is solid, and wherein the second end cap defines a restriction orifice limiting the flow through the snorkel. 10. A filter element, comprising: top and bottom end caps, the bottom end cap defining a central opening, a tubular ring of flier media extending between the top and bottom end caps, the tubular ring of filter media defining a central open volume, a bleed chamber defined proximate the bottom end cap, a snorkel in fluid communication with the bleed chamber and extending along the outside of the filter media with a vent opening closer to the top end cap than the bottom end cap; and wherein a horizontally extending passage through the bottom end cap extends the bleed passage toward the outer periphery of the bottom end cap generally beneath a bottom end of the tubular ring of filter media. 11. An apparatus comprising: a housing including an inlet and an outlet and adapted to filter fuel, a standpipe extending from a base of the housing toward a top of the housing, a fuel flow path extending from the inlet to the outlet and through the standpipe, the standpipe including a first passage along the fuel flow path and a second bleed passage; a filter element disposed in the housing and over the standpipe, the filter element comprising: a top end cap; a bottom end cap below the top end cap and defining a central opening receiving the standpipe therethrough; a tubular ring of filter media extending between the top and bottom end caps, the tubular ring of filter media defining a central open volume receiving the standpipe and providing for flow along the flow path through the filter media; a bleed chamber proximate the bottom end cap in fluid communication with the second bleed passage; a snorkel in fluid communication with the bleed chamber and extending along the outside of the filter media with a vent opening closer to the top end cap than the bottom end cap. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising first and second annular seals proximate the bottom end cap, the bleed chamber defined at least in part between the first and second annular seals, further comprising a support core disposed in the central open volume and extending between top and bottom end caps, the first seal being of smaller diameter than the second seal, the first seal mounted to the support core and sealing on a smaller diameter section of the standpipe and the second seal mounted to the bottom end cap and sealing on a larger diameter section of the standpipe, the bleed chamber being along the outside of the standpipe; a port in the standpipe between the first and second seals adapted to bleed air into the second bleed passage. 13.
