A disposable absorbent article having at least one barrier at least one barrier extending along at least a longitudinal side of the crotch portion having a proximal end being connected to the remains of the article and a distal end forming a longitudinally extending free edge. At least one of the front and rear portion have a side portion extending transversely outwardly of the proximal end of the barrier to a side portion end for fastening to the other of the front and rear portion, so as to form a closed position of the article defining a leg opening. A connecting member connects the barrier with the side portion, and extends between a first connection where the connection member is connected to the barrier and a second connection where the connection member is connected to the side portion, such that when the side portion is subject to a traction force, the traction force will be at least partially transferred to the barrier via the connecting member.
