The present invention relates to alkanolamide-containing compositions, and more particularly to alkanolamide-containing compositions formed by the reaction of a fatty acid and diethanolamine (DEA) which contain low levels of undesirable by-products. Such compositions are particularly suitable for use as fuel additives.

A method of making a fuel additive comprising an alkanolamide, the method comprising: (a) adding diethanolamine (DEA) to a fatty acid at a rate of from 0.0001% of total DEA per minute to about 5% total DEA per minute to form a mixture of fatty acid and DEA wherein the total molar quantity of fatty acid in the mixture is in excess of the total molar quantity of DEA; (b) applying a vacuum to the mixture; and (c) maintaining the mixture at a temperatu…
