Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system for retrieving a specimen includes a collapsible bag having a first mating member and a retrieval device having a second mating member. The second mating member cooperates with the first mating member for coupling the collapsible bag with the retrieval device. A rotation mechanism is disposed in the retrieval device. Actuation of the rotation device collapses an excess portion of the collapsible bag.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for retrieving a specimen comprising: a collapsible bag having; a body including an open, proximal end and a closed, distal end, the open, proximal end being configured for passage of a tissue specimen; and a first mating member coupled to the body; a retrieval device having a housing and an inner member having a second mating member, the second mating member inserted through the first mating member for coupling the bag with the retrieval device; and a rotation mechanism secured to the inner member, the rotation mechanism being actuable to effect rotation of the inner member in relation to the housing to draw a portion of the collapsible bag into the housing of the retrieval device about the inner member, and wherein the portion of the collapsible bag is drawn into the housing in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the first member, and wherein the first mating member extends from the open, proximal end to the closed, distal end of the body. 2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the portion of the collapsible bag is retracted into the housing of the retrieval device. 3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the rotation mechanism comprises a knob for actuating the rotation mechanism. 4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the retrieval device includes a ratchet mechanism to inhibit rotation of the inner member in at least one direction. 5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the first mating member is a lip supported on the collapsible bag and the second mating member includes a slit and path formed in the inner member. 6. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the first mating member is slid into the path of the second mating member. 7. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the lip has a width greater than a width of the slit. 8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the lip is cylindrical. 9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the rotation mechanism includes a knob and an axle secured to the inner member, the knob being rotatable to effect rotation of the axle and the inner member in relation to the housing. 10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the inner member is positioned such that the bag is wound about the inner member upon rotation of the inner member within the housing. 11. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the inner member of the rotation mechanism includes a slot having a first width and the housing includes a slot having a second width greater than the first width. 12. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the inner member is rotatably supported within the housing. 13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the inner member and the housing define a gap dimensioned to allow the collapsible bag to wrap around the inner member. 14. The system according to claim 13 , wherein the housing and the inner member each define a slot to facilitate passage of the collapsible bag. 15. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the portion of the collapsible bag drawn into the housing of the retrieval device includes at least a portion of the proximal end of the body and at least a portion of the distal end of the body. 16. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the body is fabricated from a biocompatible material.
