Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

New 6xxx aluminum alloy bodies and methods of producing the same are disclosed. The new 6xxx aluminum alloy bodies may be produced by preparing the aluminum alloy body for post-solutionizing cold work, cold working by at least 25%, and then thermally treating. The new 6xxx aluminum alloy bodies may realize improved strength and other properties.

What is claimed is: 1. A rolled aluminum alloy product comprising 0.25-2.0 wt. % silicon, 0.25-3.0 wt. % magnesium, and 0.35-2.0 wt. % copper, wherein at least one of the silicon and the magnesium is the predominate alloying element of the rolled aluminum alloy product other than aluminum; wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product achieves a long-transverse elongation of at least 8%; wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product achieves a long-transverse tensile yield strength of at least 65 ksi; wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product is predominately unrecrystallized. 2. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product is at least 75% unrecrystallized. 3. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product achieves a long-transverse elongation of at least 10%. 4. A forged aluminum alloy wheel comprising 0.25-2.0 wt. % silicon, 0.25-3.0 wt. % magnesium, and 0.35-2.0 wt. % copper, wherein at least one of the silicon and the magnesium is the predominate alloying element of the forged aluminum alloy wheel other than aluminum; wherein the forged aluminum alloy wheel achieves a longitudinal (L) elongation of at least 10%; wherein the forged aluminum alloy wheel achieves a longitudinal (L) tensile yield strength of at least 65 ksi; and wherein the forged aluminum alloy wheel is predominately unrecrystallized. 5. The forged aluminum alloy wheel of claim 4 , wherein the forged aluminum alloy wheel is at least 75% unrecrystallized. 6. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product achieves a long-transverse tensile yield strength of at least 68 ksi. 7. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product achieves a long-transverse tensile yield strength of at least 70 ksi. 8. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy automotive component achieves a long-transverse elongation of at least 10%. 9. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy automotive component achieves a long-transverse elongation of at least 10%. 10. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 6 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy automotive component achieves a long-transverse elongation of at least 11%. 11. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 7 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy automotive component achieves a long-transverse elongation of at least 12%. 12. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , comprising 0.35-2.0 wt. % zinc. 13. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product realizes a maximum normalized R-value of at least 3.0. 14. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product is in the form of an automotive component, and wherein the automotive component is selected from the group consisting of hood panels, fender panels, door panels, roof panels, trunk lid panels, body-in-white pillars and body-in-white reinforcements. 15. The rolled aluminum alloy product of claim 1 , wherein the rolled aluminum alloy product is a sheet product. 16.
