In a two-stroke opposed-piston engine, a ported cylinder with a pair of opposed pistons is equipped with an engine brake including an engine braking valve that can be opened to release air from the cylinder as the pistons cycle between BDC and TDC positions.

A method of operating a two-stroke, opposed-piston engine with at least one ported cylinder and pair of pistons disposed in opposition in the cylinder, in which injection of fuel into the cylinder is interrupted while charge air entering the cylinder between the opposed pistons is continuously released from the cylinder through an engine braking valve as the pistons move between BDC and TDC positions. 2.
