The particles and methods of the invention are useful for targeting and removing substances of interest that may be found in complex mixtures.

A particle, comprising a plurality of magnetic nanoparticles, and a silicon oxide shell surrounding the plurality of magnetic nanoparticles, wherein the silicon oxide shell integrally comprises a plurality of functionalized alkyl silanes, wherein each functionalized alkyl silane comprises a reactive functional group which is an electrophilic group. 2.
