A magnetic recording medium includes a nonmagnetic substrate provided on which are, in the order recited; an underlayer; a magnetic layer; a protective layer comprised of carbon; and a lubricating layer composed of a lubricant mixture composed of a lubricant represented by Formula (I) below where m is an integer equal to or greater than 1, and R 1 and R 2 are divalent straight chains consisting of both —CH 2 CF 2 — or both —CH 2 CF 2 CF 2 —; and a lubricant represented by Formula (II) below where p and q are integers equal to or greater than 0, provided that p =q =0 is excluded. A method of manufacturing the magnetic recording medium is likewise disclosed.
