A tool set for terminating an optical fiber with a fiber optic connector includes a crimping tool and a polishing tool. The crimping tool includes a locating feature for locating a housing of the fiber optic connector, a stop for locating an end of an optical fiber relative to the housing, and at least one anvil for crimping a crimp of the fiber optic connector to secure a position of the optical fiber relative to the housing. The polishing tool includes a locating feature for locating the housing and thereby locating the end of the optical fiber and a seat for activating a compression member of the fiber optic connector thereby securing the end of the optical fiber to the polishing tool.

What is claimed is: 1. A ferrule-less fiber optic connector system for terminating an optical fiber, an end portion of the optical fiber not being terminated by a ferrule, the ferrule-less fiber optic connector system comprising: a ferrule-less fiber optic connector adapted for terminating the optical fiber, the ferrule-less fiber optic connector including a housing with a locating feature; a crimping tool adapted to crimp the ferrule-less fiber optic connector to the optical fiber, the crimping tool including a locating feature adapted to engage the locating feature of the housing of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector, the crimping tool further including a stop adapted to engage an end of the optical fiber, the locating feature and the stop of the crimping tool thereby locating the end of the optical fiber with respect to the locating feature of the housing of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector; and a polishing tool adapted to polish the end of the optical fiber to a polished end, the polishing tool including a locating feature adapted to engage the locating feature of the housing of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector, the polishing tool further defining a plane to which the end of the optical fiber is polished, the locating feature and the plane of the polishing tool thereby locating the polished end of the optical fiber with respect to the locating feature of the housing of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector. 2. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 1 , wherein the plane of the polishing tool is angled with respect to an axis of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector and thereby imparts the polished end with an angle with respect to the axis of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector. 3. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 1 , wherein the crimping tool includes at least one anvil for crimping a crimp of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector and thereby securing a position of the end of the optical fiber relative to the housing of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector. 4. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 3 , wherein the crimping tool further includes a channel for holding a retractable sheath of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector, the channel positioned between the stop and the anvil. 5. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 1 , wherein the polishing tool includes a seat for activating a compression member of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector and thereby securing the end portion of the optical fiber to the polishing tool. 6. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 5 , wherein the polishing tool further includes a channel for holding a retractable sheath of the ferrule-less fiber optic connector, the channel positioned between the locating feature and the seat. 7. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule-less fiber optic connector includes a retractable sheath that supports the end portion of the optical fiber when extended and does not support the end portion of the optical fiber when retracted. 8. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 7 , wherein the retractable sheath is adapted to retract when the ferrule-less fiber optic connector is inserted into a fiber optic adapter. 9. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 1 , wherein the end portion of the optical fiber extends beyond the ferrule-less fiber optic connector when a retractable sheath is retracted. 10. The ferrule-less fiber optic connector system of claim 1 , wherein the end portion of the optical fiber extends beyond the ferrule-less fiber optic connector when the ferrule-less fiber optic connector is inserted into a fiber optic adapter.
