Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A user interface screen includes names stores in a mobile unit device's address book. In order for a user to send an instant message, the user selects a create message display screen, enters a text message using the mobile unit device's keypad, and then selects a recipient (an instant message name) from the address book user interface screen. The instant message routing server checks availability of recipients (instant message names in the stored instant message name list) and sends the results back to the mobile unit device. In a display area, recipients are indicated as signed on the instant message system, or as being signed off the instant message system.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A method comprising: displaying on a display of a mobile device at least a portion of a group of users; receiving an indication that a user from the group of users is signed on to a communications system based on performance of a sign-on function: indicating on the display of the mobile device that the user of the group of users is signed on to the communications system; identifying, using at least one processor, a selection of the user that is signed on to the communications system; and presenting on the display of the mobile device a create message display screen for composing a message intended for the selected user. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein displaying at least a portion of the group of users comprises displaying usernames associated with one or more users of the group of users. 3. The method as recited in claim 2 , further comprising displaying the usernames in a list. 4. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein indicating that the user of the group of users is signed on to the communications system comprises displaying an indication next to a username associated with the user. 5. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein receiving the selection of the user comprises receiving a selection of a username associated with the user. 6. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the selection of the username is received via a touch screen. 7. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising indicating that one or more users of the group of users is signed off of the communications system. 8. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising sending the message for delivery to the selected user. 9. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the message comprises an instant message. 10. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein sending the message comprises sending a text message to an instant message host for delivery to the user as an instant message. 11. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising receiving status information for one or more users of the group of users, the status information indicating whether the one or more users are signed on to the communications system. 12. The method as recited in claim 11 , wherein the status information indicates whether the one or more users are on-line. 13. The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the communications system is an instant message system. 14. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the mobile device comprises a cellular phone. 15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including a set of instructions that, when executed, cause at least one processor to perform steps comprising: displaying on a display of a mobile device at least a portion of a group of users; receiving an indication that a user of the group of users is signed on to a communications system based performance of a sign-on function; indicating on the display of the mobile device that the user of the group of users is signed on to the communications system; receiving a selection of the user that is signed on to the communications system; and presenting on the display of the mobile device a create message display screen for composing a message intended for the selected user. 16. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to display usernames associated with one or more users of the group of users. 17. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 16 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to display the usernames in a list. 18. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 17 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to display an indication next to a username associated with the user to indicate the user is signed on to the communications system. 19. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 18 , wherein receiving the selection of the user comprises receiving a selection of the username associated with the user. 20. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 19 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to receive the selection of the username associated with the user via a touch screen. 21. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 20 , wherein the mobile device comprises a cellular phone. 22. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 18 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to indicate that at least one user of the group of users is signed off of the communications system. 23. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 18 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to send the message for delivery to the selected user. 24. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 18 , wherein the message comprises an instant message. 25. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 24 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to send the instant message as a text message to an instant message host for delivery to the user as an instant message. 26. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 18 , further comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to receive status information for the one or more users of the group of users, the status information indicating whether the one or more users are signed on to the communications system. 27. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 26 , wherein the status information indicates whether the users are on-line. 28. The computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 27 , wherein the communications system is an instant message system. 29. A method comprising: displaying, on a display, at least a portion of a group of users; receiving an indication that a user of the group of users is signed on to a communcations system based on performance of a sign-on function; indicating on the display that the user of the group of users is signed on to the communications system via a mobile device; receiving a selection of the user; and presenting a create message display screen for composing a message intended for the user. 30. The method as recited in claim 29 , wherein displaying at least a portion of a group of users comprises displaying usernames associated with one or more users of the group of users. 31.
