In one embodiment, the invention is to a catalyst composition for converting ethanol to higher alcohols, such as butanol. The catalyst composition comprises one or more metals and one or more supports. The one or more metals selected from the group consisting of cobalt, nickel, palladium, platinum, zinc, iron, tin and copper. The one or more supports are selected from the group consisting of Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , MgO, TiO 2 , zeolite, ZnO, and mixtures thereof, wherein the catalyst is substantially free of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals.

A catalyst for converting alcohols to higher alcohols, the catalyst comprising: one or more metals selected from the group consisting of cobalt, palladium, and copper; and a support selected from the group consisting of γ-Aluminum Oxide, θ-Aluminum Oxide, and mixtures thereof; wherein the support has an average particle size ranging from 0.85 mm to 1.18 mm. 2.
