Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An air maintenance tire includes a tire carcass; a flexible tire component strip such as a chafer component forming a portion of the tire carcass, the tire component strip having a channel formed within an upper surface defined by opposed strip lip portions and a channel bottom wall; an air passageway within the flexible tire component extending between air inlet and air outlet cavities in the flexible tire component, the air passageway extending at least a partial circumferential path around the tire carcass; and an elongate passageway-shaping strip assembly occupying and enclosed within the air passageway of the flexible tire component, the passageway-shaping strip assembly operative forming and maintaining the air passageway to a cross-sectional configuration replicating a cross-sectional configuration of the passageway-shaping strip assembly. The passageway-shaping strip is removable from the air passageway in a post-cure procedure to make the air passageway unobstructed and in a preferred cross-sectional configuration.

What is claimed is: 1. An air maintenance uncured tire assembly comprising: an uncured tire carcass; a flexible tire component strip forming a portion of the tire carcass, the tire component strip having a channel extending therein defined by opposed lip portions and a channel bottom wall; an air passageway within the flexible tire component formed by a channel within the flexible tire component, the channel extending between an air inlet cavity and an air outlet cavity in the flexible tire component, the channel forming the air passageway extending at least a partial circumferential path around the tire carcass; an elongate passageway-shaping strip assembly occupying and enclosed within the channel of the flexible tire component, the passageway shaping strip assembly operative to form and maintain the channel to a cross-sectional configuration replicating a cross-sectional configuration of the passageway-shaping strip assembly. 2. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 1 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip is removable from the channel. 3. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 2 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly comprises a free end portion accessible to at least one of the air inlet and air outlet cavities. 4. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 3 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly is operatively removable from the air passageway by a withdrawal force application to the free end portion of the passageway-shaping strip assembly. 5. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 4 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly has a substantially elliptical cross-sectional configuration. 6. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 5 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly has a core substantially composed of a silicone material. 7. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 6 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly has an outer sheath surrounding the core substantially composed of a rubber composition. 8. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 1 , wherein the flexible tire component comprises a chafer component. 9. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 8 , wherein the chafer component increases in sectional thickness from a radially outward region to a radially inward region, the channel residing within the radially inward region. 10. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 9 , wherein the channel extends at an angle into an upper surface of the radially inward region toward the radially outward region. 11. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 10 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly is removable from the air passageway. 12. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 11 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly comprises a free end portion accessible to at least one of the air inlet and air outlet cavities. 13. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 12 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly is operatively removable from the air passageway by a withdrawal force application to the free end portion of the passageway-shaping strip assembly. 14. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 13 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly has a substantially elliptical cross-sectional configuration. 15. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 14 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly has a core substantially composed of a silicone material. 16. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 15 , wherein the passageway-shaping strip assembly has an outer sheath surrounding the core substantially composed of a rubber composition. 17. The air maintenance uncured tire assembly of claim 1 , wherein the channel forming the air passageway extends a circumferential path of substantially 180 degrees around a circumference of the tire carcass.
