The disclosure presents exemplary embodiments of a cartridge nut concept for conduit fittings. The cartridge nut concept may include the feature of loosely retaining one or more conduit gripping devices with a fitting component such as a male or female threaded nut. The cartridge nut concept may be realized using one or more geometry or shape features or characteristics of one or more conduit gripping devices. Still further, the cartridge nut concept may be realized in combination with a ferrule cartridge concept.

We claim: 1. A fitting assembly for conduits, comprising: a male threaded first fitting component to be assembled with a female threaded second fitting component, to provide an interior volume, a front ferrule and a back ferrule both disposed entirely in said interior volume, said second fitting component comprising a drive surface that engages, a back wall of said back ferrule when the fitting assembly is pulled-up, a retaining structure that retains said front ferrule and said back ferrule with said second fitting component as a subassembly prior to said first fitting component being assembled with said second fitting component, said front ferrule comprising an outer wall, said retaining structure comprising a recess in said outer wall of said front ferrule and a retaining member that cooperates with said recess to retain said front ferrule and said back ferrule with said second fitting component as a subassembly prior to said second fitting component being assembled with said first fitting component. 2. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are loosely retained with said second fitting component so that when said first fitting component is assembled with said second fitting component in a finger-tight position said front ferrule contacts a camming surface of said first fitting component, a front end of said back ferrule contacts a back end of said front ferrule, and a back end of said back ferrule contacts said drive surface of said second fitting component. 3. The fitting assembly of claim 2 wherein the fitting assembly comprises only stainless steel parts. 4. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are retained together as a ferrule subassembly prior to being assembled with said second fitting component. 5. The fitting assembly of claim 4 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are loosely retained together with said second fitting component. 6. The fitting assembly of claim 5 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule snap together. 7. The fitting assembly of claim 4 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are loosely retained together as said fitting subassembly prior to being assembled with said second fitting component. 8. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said female threaded second fitting component comprises a nut. 9. The fitting assembly of claim 8 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are retained with said female threaded second fitting component as a discontinuous subassembly. 10. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said retaining member retains said front ferrule with said female threaded second fitting component as a preassembly, said retaining member being released from said front ferrule after at least a partial pull-up of the fitting assembly. 11. The fitting assembly of claim 10 wherein said retaining member comprises an annular ring. 12. The fitting assembly of claim 11 wherein said annular ring comprises a spring. 13. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said female threaded second fitting component comprises a second recess; and said retaining structure comprises a ring. 14. The fitting assembly of claim 13 wherein said ring is positioned in said recess in said outer wall of said front ferrule when said male threaded first fitting component is assembled with said female threaded second fitting component in a finger tight position, and said ring moves into said second recess in said female threaded second fitting component as the fitting assembly is being pulled up. 15. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said front ferrule comprises a first radial flange and a second radial flange with said recess in said outer wall of said front ferrule being between said first radial flange and said second radial flange. 16. The fitting assembly of claim 1 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are annularly continuous. 17. A preassembly for an all metal conduit fitting, comprising: a metal female threaded fitting component, a front ferrule and a back ferrule, said female threaded fitting component comprising an interior volume with said front ferrule and said back ferrule both retained entirely in said interior volume, and a drive surface of said female threaded fitting component that engages a back wall of said back ferrule when said female threaded fitting component is pulled-up with a mating male threaded fitting component, a metal retaining structure that retains said front ferrule and said back ferrule with said metal female threaded fitting component, wherein said retaining structure has a first axial position in which said front ferrule is retained with said metal female threaded fitting component and a second axial position in which said front ferrule will be released from said retaining structure when said metal female threaded fitting component is in a pulled-up position with the mating male threaded fitting component. 18. The preassembly of claim 17 wherein said retaining structure comprises a retaining member, said retaining member comprising an annular ring or a spring. 19. The preassembly of claim 17 wherein said metal female threaded fitting component comprises a nut. 20. The preassembly of claim 17 wherein said retaining structure comprises a first recess in said metal female threaded fitting component, a second recess in an outer wall of said front ferrule, and a retaining member. 21. The preassembly of claim 20 wherein said retaining member comprises a ring that is positioned in said second recess when said female threaded fitting component is assembled with said mating male threaded fitting component in a finger tight position, and said ring moves into said first recess during pull-up. 22. The preassembly of claim 21 wherein said front ferrule comprises a first radial flange and a second radial flange with said second recess being between said first radial flange and said second radial flange. 23. The preassembly of claim 17 wherein said front ferrule and said back ferrule are annularly continuous.
