A syringe including at least one retaining member protruding radially outward relative to an outer surface of a sidewall of a barrel of a syringe is described. The syringe retaining member is configured for interacting with a locking mechanism of a syringe port of a fluid injector to releasably retain the ring. Features of the syringe retaining member allow the syringe to be axially ejected from the syringe port upon rotation of the syringe. Other features of the syringe retaining member allow the syringe to engage the locking mechanism of the syringe port and rotationally guide the syringe into self-orienting alignment with the locking mechanism.

We claim: 1 . A syringe comprising: at least one syringe retaining member, the at least one syringe retaining member comprising: a base surface on a distal side of the at least one syringe retaining member and extending perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the syringe, wherein the base surface is configured for releasably engaging a locking surface of a syringe locking mechanism of a fluid injector; a third surface proximal to the base surface and tapered axially relative to the longitudinal axis of the syringe; a first surface extending from a first end of the base surface to a most proximal end of the third surface; and a second surface extending from a second end of the base surface to a most distal end of the third surface. 2 . The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the first surface and the third surface are joined together at a rounded point or a sharp point. 3 . The syringe of claim 2 , wherein the first surface and the third surface are joined together at a rounded point. 4 . The syringe of claim 2 , wherein the rounded point or the sharp point at the juncture of the first surface and the third surface engage the locking mechanism of the syringe port of the fluid injector such that at least a portion of the third surface rotationally guides the syringe into self-orienting alignment with the locking mechanism. 5 . The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the third surface is one of a planar surface, a segmented surface, an arcuate surface, a curved surface, a discontinuous surface defining a tapered surface, and combinations thereof. 6 . The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the third surface is an accurate surface. 7 . The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the first surface, the second surface, the third surface, and the base surface define a border of a top surface of the at least one syringe retaining member. 8 . The syringe of claim 7 , wherein the top surface has a curvature parallel to and shaped to correspond to a curvature of the sidewall of the barrel of the syringe. 9 . The syringe of claim 7 , wherein the top surface comprises a plurality of separate surfaces defining the top surface. 10 . The syringe of claim 9 , wherein the top surface has at least one hollow section defined by the plurality of separate surfaces of the top surface and projecting radially inward from the top surface. 11 . The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the syringe comprises a plurality of syringe retaining members. 12 . The syringe of claim 11 , wherein the syringe comprises two syringe retaining members. 13 . The syringe of claim 12 , wherein the two syringe retaining members are on opposite sides of a circumference of a barrel of the syringe. 14 . The syringe of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first surface and the second surface is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the syringe. 15 . A syringe comprising: at least two retaining members protruding radially outward relative to an outer surface of a sidewall of a barrel of a syringe, each of the at least two syringe retaining members comprising: a base surface on a distal side of each of the at least two syringe retaining members and extending perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the syringe, wherein the base surface is configured for releasably engaging a locking surface of a syringe locking mechanism of a fluid injector; an arcuate third surface proximal to the base surface tapered axially relative to the longitudinal axis of the syringe; and a first surface extending from a first end of the base surface to a most proximal end of the third surface; wherein the first surface and the third surface are joined together at a rounded point or a sharp point, and wherein the rounded point or the sharp point at the juncture of the first surface and the third surface engage the locking mechanism of the syringe port of the fluid injector such that at least a portion of the third surface rotationally guides the syringe into self-orienting alignment with the locking mechanism. 16 . The syringe of claim 15 , wherein at least a portion of the third surface axially ejects the syringe from the syringe port upon rotation of the syringe. 17 . The syringe of claim 15 , wherein each the at least two syringe retaining members further comprises a second surface extending from a second end of the base surface to a most distal end of the third surface. 18 . The syringe of claim 17 , wherein the first surface, the second surface, the third surface, and the base surface define a border of a top surface of each of the at least two syringe retaining members, wherein the top surface defines a hollow section, the hollow section projecting radially inward from the top surface.
