A method for manufacturing pig iron in an electrical smelting furnace including a vessel 20, the method including the following successive steps: loading DRI product in the vessel, melting the DRI product to form a pig iron layer topped by a slag layer, and injecting a desulphurizing reagent directly in the pig iron layer. It also deals with the manufacturing of steel from the pig iron and the associated electrical smelting furnace.

What is claimed is: 1 - 11 . (canceled) 12 : A method for manufacturing pig iron in an electrical smelting furnace comprising a vessel, the method comprising the following successive steps: loading DRI product in the vessel; melting the DRI product to form a pig iron layer topped by a slag layer; and injecting a desulphurizing reagent material directly in the pig iron layer. 13 : The method according to claim 12 wherein the smelting furnace includes a at least one bottom tuyere provided on the vessel, the desulphurizing reagent being injected through the at least one bottom tuyere directly in the pig iron layer. 14 : The method according to claim 12 wherein the desulphurizing reagent is injected in an amount sufficient to reach a final sulphur content of below 0.02% in weight in the pig iron layer. 15 : The method according to claim 12 wherein the desulphurizing reagent is injected with a carrier-gas. 16 : The method according to claim 12 wherein the desulphurizing reagent is chosen from at least one of the group consisting of: sodium carbonate, lime, calcium carbide, magnesium and a mixture of any of those materials. 17 : The method according to claim 12 wherein the desulphurizing reagent has particles having a particle size below 3 mm. 18 : The method according to claim 12 wherein the DRI product is manufactured using a reducing gas containing at least 50% in volume of hydrogen before being loaded in the smelting furnace. 19 : The method according to claim 12 wherein a silicon containing material and/or carbon containing material are added to the desulphurizing reagent to be injected in the pig iron layer. 20 : A method for manufacturing steel employing the method as recited in claim 12 comprising the steps of: transferring the pig iron from the smelting furnace to a converter; and lowering a carbon content of the pig iron to a value below 2.1 percent in weight by blowing oxygen to obtain liquid steel. 21 : The method for manufacturing steel according to claim 20 wherein ferrous scraps are added to the pig iron in the converter, the ferrous scraps being melted. 22 : An electrical smelting furnace for manufacturing pig iron comprising: a vessel, the vessel being provided with a bottom tuyere configured to inject a desulphurizing agent directly into pig iron in the vessel.
