Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Roofing panels with water shedding features may be installed on the roof of a house or other structure in lieu of or as an underlayment for traditional roofing materials. The water shedding features can be built into a base of the roofing panels, as part of a frame for the roofing panels, or formed as part of a waterproofing layer applied to the base of the roofing panels, or which can be configured as a roofing panel. The roofing panels also can be installed in overlapping courses along a roof with water shedding features applied thereto or incorporated along one or more peripheral edges. The water shedding features of adjacent roofing panels will collect and divert water away from the upper surfaces and/or away from headlap and/or sidelap joints defined between the roofing panels.

1 . A roof system, comprising: a roof deck; a plurality of metal roofing panels configured to be installed in overlapping courses along the roof deck, wherein each metal roofing panel comprises: an upper surface having an exposure region, a lower surface, a plurality of peripheral edge portions, wherein each of the plurality of edge portions includes an upslope edge portion, a downslope edge portion, and side edge portions, a sidelap defined along at least one of the side edge portions, wherein the sidelap is configured to interlock with a corresponding sidelap of a horizontally adjacent metal roofing panel in the same course to form a sidelap seam, and a headlap defined along at least one of the upslope or downslope edge portions, wherein the headlap is configured to overlap a corresponding headlap of a vertically adjacent metal roofing panel in an adjacent course to form a headlap seam, wherein the metal roofing panels are formed of coated metal, wherein the metal roofing panels are configured such that, when installed, the sidelaps of horizontally adjacent metal roofing panels interlock to form a water-shedding joint along the side edge portions, the headlaps of vertically adjacent metal roofing panels overlap to form a water-shedding joint along the upslope and downslope edge portions, and the exposure region of each metal roofing panel remains substantially exposed when installed, wherein the downslope edge portion of each metal roofing panel comprises a downturned edge, and the upslope edge portion comprises a nailing flange, wherein the downturned edge of a metal roofing panel in an upper course is configured to overlap the nailing flange of a metal roofing panel in a lower course, wherein the metal roofing panels are secured to the roof deck with fasteners extending through the nailing flange positioned along the upslope edge portion of each panel, and the fasteners are inserted through the nailing flange without engagement of the downturned edge, and an adhesive strip is positioned along at least one of the sidelap or headlap to seal the corresponding seam against water penetration, and a water-shedding underlayment positioned between the roof deck and the metal roofing panels, wherein the underlayment extends over substantially the entire roof deck. 2 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive strip comprises a butyl tape. 3 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the water-shedding underlayment comprises a peel-and-stick polymeric membrane. 4 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the nailing flange is integrally formed with the upslope edge portion of each metal roofing panel. 5 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the fasteners comprise corrosion-resistant nails. 6 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the metal roofing panels are formed from coated metal. 7 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the exposure region of each metal roofing panel includes an embossed texture. 8 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the downslope edge portion of each metal roofing panel includes a downturned hem configured to direct water away from the roof deck. 9 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the side edge portions of each metal roofing panel include a hook or hem configured to interlock with a corresponding feature of a horizontally adjacent metal roofing panel. 10 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the water-shedding underlayment is installed over the entire roof deck and extends from an eave edge to a ridge of the roof deck. 11 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive strip is positioned along the side edge portion of each metal roofing panel. 12 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive strip is positioned along the downslope edge portion of each metal roofing panel. 13 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the metal roofing panels are installed on a roof deck having a slope of at least 3:12. 14 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the metal roofing panels are installed such that the fasteners do not penetrate a downturned edge of the downslope edge portion. 15 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the water-shedding underlayment is adhered directly to the roof deck. 16 . The roof system of claim 1 , wherein the metal roofing panels comprise a corrosion-resistant metallic coating. 17 . The roof system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more solar panels installed in the roof system, each solar panel having a length and width substantially matching the length and width of at least one of the metal roofing panels. 18 . The roof system of claim 17 , wherein the solar panels are installed in courses along the roof deck together with the metal roofing panels, such that the solar panels and metal roofing panels are horizontally and vertically adjacent to one another. 19 . The roof system of claim 17 , wherein the solar panels are configured to interlock or overlap with the metal roofing panels at their respective sidelap and headlap seams.
