Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fluid injection system and a fluid verification system for confirming that a syringe, containing a fluid for injection, is fully filled with fluid and neither has free space (i.e., air) near the distal end thereof when the syringe is provided in an upright position nor contains air bubbles. Imaging processing techniques and systems are also provided to determine various injection parameters and to verify the type and certain properties of fluid that is present within a syringe.

1 - 35 . (canceled) 36 . A fluid injection system comprising: a fluid injector; a syringe operatively engaged with the fluid injector, the syringe comprising a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end having at least a portion that expands when a syringe internal pressure increases during an injection procedure; an image capture device positioned to capture an image of at least the portion of the syringe; and at least one computing device in communication with the fluid injector and the image capture device, the at least one computing device comprising at least one processor configured to: actuate the fluid injector to begin the injection procedure; obtain the image of at least the portion of the syringe during the injection procedure; measure a diameter of at least the portion of the syringe in the image of at least the portion of the syringe; correlate the measured diameter of at least the portion of the syringe with known diameters of at least the portion of the syringe at various syringe internal pressures to determine a syringe internal pressure corresponding to the measured diameter of at least the portion of the syringe; and automatically display on a display device in communication with the at least one processor the syringe internal pressure corresponding to the measured diameter of at least the portion of the syringe. 37 . The fluid injection system of claim 36 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to: control the fluid injector to adjust the syringe internal pressure based on the measured diameter of at least the portion of the syringe during the injection procedure. 38 . The fluid injection system of claim 36 , wherein at least the portion of the syringe is at least one flexible section that is configured to expand when the syringe internal pressure increases during the injection procedure 39 . The fluid injection system of claim 38 , wherein the at least one flexible section is to be insert molded from a material that is more flexible than a material forming the barrel of the syringe. 40 . The fluid injection system of claim 38 , wherein the material of the at least one flexible section is TPU, TPE, polypropylene, polyethylene, thermoplastic elastomers, or any combination thereof. 41 . The fluid injection system of claim 38 , wherein the at least one flexible section is provided on a connector attached to the distal end of the syringe. 42 . A fluid injection system comprising: a fluid injector; a syringe operatively engaged with the fluid injector in a vertical orientation, the syringe comprising a barrel and defining an interior volume configured to receive a fluid and at least one object having a density that is different than the density of the fluid such that the at least one object floats if the fluid is present within the barrel; an image capture device positioned to capture an image of the barrel; and at least one computing device in communication with the fluid injector and the image capture device, the at least one computing device comprising at least one processor configured to: obtain the image of the barrel; determine, based on the image of the barrel, a position of the at least one object within the barrel and thus whether the barrel is one of (i) filled with a first type of fluid; (ii) filled with a second type of fluid; and (iii) filled at least partially with air; and automatically display on a display device in communication with the at least one processor an indication of at least one of: an indication of a type of fluid contained within the syringe and an indication that air is present in the syringe based on the position of the at least one object. 43 . The fluid injection system of claim 42 , wherein the first type of fluid is contrast and the second type of fluid is saline. 44 . The fluid injection system of claim 42 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to: disable the fluid injector from conducting an injection procedure if it is determined that the syringe is at least partially filled with air. 45 . The fluid injection system of claim 42 , wherein the at least one object within the barrel has a positive buoyancy at zero pressure when submerged a fluid provided within the syringe such that the at least one object sinks when pressure within the syringe is increased. 46 . The fluid injection system of claim 42 , wherein the image capture device is configured to capture an image of the barrel during an injection procedure and the at least one processor is configured to obtain the image of the barrel during the injection procedure and limit a pressure of the injection if the at least one object sinks within the syringe during the injection procedure.
