Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An aerosol delivery device includes an electrical power source, an induction receiver configured to receive a substrate including an aerosol precursor composition such that the induction receiver is in proximity to the substrate, and a wireless power transmitter including an induction transmitter. The induction transmitter is configured to removably receive the induction receiver such that the induction transmitter surrounds the induction receiver. The induction transmitter receive electrical current from the electrical power source that causes the induction transmitter to generate an oscillating magnetic field, and the induction receiver generates heat via eddy currents induced at the induction receiver when exposed to the oscillating magnetic field and thereby heats the aerosol precursor composition to produce an aerosol. Related methods are also provided.

1 . A method of operating an aerosol delivery device, the method comprising: providing a control body including an electrical power source and an induction transmitter; and providing a cartridge including an induction receiver and an aerosol precursor composition, wherein the cartridge is couplable with the control body, and wherein the induction receiver comprises a mesh; receiving at the induction transmitter an electrical current from the electrical power source that causes the induction transmitter to generate an oscillating magnetic field, and generating heat at the induction receiver via eddy currents induced at the induction receiver when exposed to the oscillating magnetic field, and heating the aerosol precursor composition to produce an aerosol, wherein the induction transmitter comprises a coil, and wherein the coil substantially surrounds the mesh induction receiver. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the aerosol precursor composition comprises a liquid aerosol precursor composition. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the induction transmitter defines a tubular configuration. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the induction transmitter further includes a coil support. 5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the coil support defines a tubular configuration configured to support the coil. 6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the coil support comprises a nonconductive material. 7 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the coil support comprises a plastic material. 8 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the coil is coupled to coil support. 9 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the coil is imbedded in the coil support. 10 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the coil has helical configuration. 11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the control body defines an outer body, and wherein the control body further includes an insulator positioned between the induction transmitter and outer body. 12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the induction receiver comprises a conductive metal material. 13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the induction receiver comprises a ferromagnetic material. 14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the aerosol precursor composition comprises a liquid aerosol precursor composition, and wherein the cartridge includes a substrate comprising a wick configured to receive the aerosol precursor composition from an internal compartment of the cartridge. 15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein a longitudinal axis of the substrate is positioned substantially coaxial with a longitudinal axis of the induction receiver. 16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the induction transmitter extends along a portion of the longitudinal length of the induction receiver. 17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the induction transmitter extends along substantially all of the longitudinal length of the induction receiver. 18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the produced aerosol is configured to travel around the induction receiver. 19 . The method of claim 1 further comprising a puff sensor that detects a draw on the aerosol delivery device. 20 . The method of claim 19 further comprising a controller in communication with the electrical power source and the puff sensor, and wherein the controller directs current from the electrical power source to the induction transmitter when the puff sensor detects a draw on the aerosol delivery device.
