Official abstract text for this publication.
It is provided a process to modify lignocellulosic materials with lignin, and incorporating lignin and isocyanates or other wood adhesive in wood products compositions, and their composition, preparation and application for bonding wood products are disclosed. The compositions comprise lignin, derived from a variety of natural resources, isocyanate compounds containing two or more isocyanate functional groups, or other wood adhesives.

What is claimed is: 1 . A process of producing a wood product, the process consisting of: a) blending wood chips with lignin that is non-polymerized and derived from black liquor prior to refining, to produce a wood chip-lignin mixture; b) refining the wood chip-lignin mixture by cooking the wood chip-lignin mixture by injection of pressure steam at a temperature between 130-180° C. in a digester, and blending the wood chips with the lignin during the refining, to produce refined fibers; c) blending the refined fibers with partial isocyanate and partial or no wax producing a resinated material; d) forming a mat from said resinated material; and e) compressing or molding said mat producing a wood product at elevated temperature, wherein the lignin is kraft lignin, soda lignin, hydrolysis lignin, lignosulfonate, organosolv lignin, or klason lignin 2 . The process of claim 1 , wherein a plug-screw is used to blend the wood chips and lignin. 3 . The process of claim 1 , wherein a blender is used to blend the wood chips and lignin. 4 . The process of claim 1 , further comprising, between steps b) and c), incorporating lignin in said refined fibers through a blow-line. 5 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said wood product is an insulation board and/or a molded product. 6 . The process of claim 1 , wherein said wood product is a low-density insulation board, a medium-density fiberboard (MDF), a high-density fiberboard (HDF), a fiber-based insulation board, a paper product, or a non-wood lignocellulosic board. 7 . The process of claim 1 , where said wood product is particleboard (PB), an Oriented Strand Board (OSB), a bark board, or a non-wood lignocellulosic board 8 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the lignin is in a powder form or in suspension. 9 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the lignin is in a powder form or in suspension.
