Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicle includes a chassis, a front axle coupled to the chassis, a rear axle coupled to the chassis, and an electric energy system. The electric energy system includes a first battery pack positioned forward of the rear axle and supported by the chassis and a second battery pack positioned separate from the first battery pack rearward of the rear axle. An uppermost periphery of the first battery pack is spaced a distance below a top of the chassis and above a bottom of the chassis. At least a portion of the first battery pack extends lower than the bottom of the chassis. At least a portion of the second battery pack is positioned at an elevated height relative to the first battery pack such that an uppermost periphery of the second battery pack is positioned above a point at which a body assembly contacts the top of the chassis.

1 . A vehicle comprising: a chassis comprising a pair of longitudinal frame members; a front axle coupled to the chassis; a rear axle coupled to the chassis; and an electric energy system including: a first plurality of battery cells positioned forward of the rear axle and supported by the chassis, an uppermost periphery of the first plurality of battery cells being (a) spaced a distance below a top of the pair of longitudinal frame members and (b) above a bottom of the pair of longitudinal frame members, at least a portion of the first plurality of battery cells extending lower than the bottom of the pair of longitudinal frame members; and a second plurality of battery cells positioned separate from the first plurality of battery cells rearward of the rear axle, at least a portion of the second plurality of battery cells positioned at an elevated height relative to the first plurality of battery cells such that an uppermost periphery of the second plurality of battery cells is positioned above a point at which a body assembly, when supported by the chassis, contacts the top of the pair of longitudinal frame members. 2 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are replaceable. 3 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is fully powered by the electric energy system. 4 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle does not include an internal combustion engine. 5 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electric energy system is configured to provide electrical energy to an electric actuator of the vehicle. 6 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are positioned beneath the body assembly when the body assembly is supported by the chassis. 7 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are positioned between the front axle and the rear axle. 8 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are positioned at least partially laterally outwards of a lateral side of the chassis. 9 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of battery cells are positioned within a housing, wherein an uppermost periphery of the housing is positioned lower than a bottom periphery of the body assembly, when supported by the chassis, and wherein at least a portion of the housing extends lower than the pair of longitudinal frame members of the chassis. 10 . The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a cab supported by the chassis. 11 . The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising the body assembly supported by the chassis. 12 . A vehicle comprising: a chassis; a front axle coupled to the chassis; a rear axle coupled to the chassis; and an electric energy system including: a first battery pack positioned forward of the rear axle and supported by the chassis, an uppermost periphery of the first battery pack being (a) spaced a distance below a top of the chassis and (b) above a bottom of the chassis, at least a portion of the first battery pack extending lower than the bottom of the chassis; and a second battery pack positioned separate from the first battery pack rearward of the rear axle, at least a portion of the second battery pack positioned at an elevated height relative to the first battery pack such that an uppermost periphery of the second battery pack is positioned above a point at which a body assembly, when supported by the chassis, contacts the top of the chassis. 13 . The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the first battery pack is positioned between the front axle and the rear axle. 14 . The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the first battery pack is positioned at least partially laterally outwards of a lateral side of the chassis. 15 . The vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising a cab supported by the chassis. 16 . The vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising the body assembly supported by the chassis. 17 . A vehicle comprising: a chassis; a front axle coupled to the chassis; a rear axle coupled to the chassis; and an electric energy system including: a first battery pack having an uppermost periphery positioned (a) below a top of the chassis and (b) above a bottom of the chassis, at least a portion of the first battery pack extending lower than the bottom of the chassis; and a second battery pack positioned separate from the first battery pack, at least a portion of the second battery pack positioned at an elevated height relative to the first battery pack such that an uppermost periphery of the second battery pack is positioned above the top of the chassis. 18 . The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the second battery pack is positioned rearward of the rear axle. 19 . The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the first battery pack is positioned forward of the rear axle. 20 . The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the first battery pack is positioned at least partially laterally outwards of a lateral side of the chassis.
