A wall-plate system having a wall-plate adapted to accommodate a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) coupled with the wall-plate and may comprise a mounting bracket. The PCBA may include one or more chip packages and/or other components that extend into cavities in the mounting bracket after installation, the cavities located on the mounting bracket to accommodate chip packages and/or other components. The wall-plate may include snaps to couple with the mounting bracket, the snaps extending from an interior surface of the wall-plate, the snaps located away from edges of the wall-plate towards a center of the wall-plate. The mounting bracket may comprise openings to couple with a device in a junction box and/or with the junction box. The wall-plate may comprise, e.g., one or more battery mounts and the mounting bracket may have a shape to accommodate extension by the battery mounts into a plane of the mounting bracket.

We claim: 1 . A smart wall-plate device, comprising: a wall-plate having a front surface and rear surface, the wall-plate including an opening through the front and rear surfaces, the opening sized and configured to receive a user accessible portion of an in-wall electrical device; and a printed circuit board (PCB) arranged and configured to couple to a portion of the rear surface, the PCB not located within the opening, the PCB further comprising: a user input component mounted on the PCB, the user input component being a separate element than the user accessible portion of the electrical device, the user input component arranged and configured to detect a user input; a processor; a memory in electrical communication with the processor, the memory including instructions to be executed by the processor; and a wireless communications interface in electrical communication with the processor, the wireless communications interface including: a plurality of wireless transceivers to facilitate communication with one or more wireless devices and/or one or more cloud services platforms, the communication with the one or more wireless devices being via a first wireless communication protocol and the communication with the one or more cloud services platforms being via a second wireless communication protocol, the second wireless communication protocol being different from the first wireless communication protocol, wherein one of the first and second wireless communication protocols is a local area network protocol, wherein upon execution of the instructions in the memory, the processor detects the user input and performs one or more of: communicate with the one or more cloud services platforms to engage services provided by the one or more cloud services platforms, and control local or remote devices in accordance with a predetermined automation activity. 2 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 1 wherein the wireless communications interface further comprises a baseband module coupled with the plurality of wireless transceivers. 3 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 1 , wherein the first wireless communication protocol comprises a Wi-Fi protocol and the second wireless communication protocol comprises a Bluetooth protocol. 4 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 3 , wherein the wireless communications interface, when first powered on, actively seeks a Bluetooth connection with the local device via the Bluetooth protocol or waits for a request from the local device to pair via the Bluetooth protocol. 5 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 3 , the wireless communications interface to establish a connection with the one or more cloud services platforms via the local area network protocol. 6 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 1 , the wireless communications interface to generate and receive packets comprising a packet header, a payload, and a data integrity check. 7 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 6 , wherein one or more of the packets may comprise a first address for the wireless communications interface, wherein the first address comprises a medium access control (MAC) address, and a second address, wherein the second address comprises a basic service set identifier (BSSID) or a service set identifier (SSID). 8 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 1 , further comprising a mounting bracket including two sets of mounting holes, one set of mounting holes arranged and configured for coupling the mounting bracket to an in-wall electrical device and one set of mounting holes arranged and configured to couple the mounting bracket to a junction box mounted in a wall. 9 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 8 , further comprising a battery mount mounted on the PCB, wherein the mounting bracket comprises a shape to accommodate the battery mount, wherein the battery mount extends into a plane of the mounting bracket after the wall-plate is coupled with the mounting bracket. 10 . The smart wall-plate device of claim 9 , wherein the mounting bracket or the wall-plate comprises a cavity to accommodate one or more chip packages. 11 . A smart wall-plate system, comprising: a mounting bracket to couple to an electrical device installed within a junction box, or directly to the junction box, mounted in a wall; a wall-plate to couple with the mounting bracket, the wall-plate having a front surface and rear surface, the wall-plate including an opening through the front and rear surfaces, the opening sized and configured to receive a user accessible portion of an in-wall electrical device; and a printed circuit board (PCB) arranged and configured to couple to a portion of the rear surface, the PCB not located within the opening, the PCB further comprising: a user input component mounted on the PCB, the user input component being a separate element than the user accessible portion of the electrical device, the user input component arranged and configured to detect a user input; a processor; a memory coupled with the processor, the memory including instructions to be executed by the processor; and a wireless communications interface coupled with the processor, the wireless communications interface including: one or more antennas; one or more radios; and one or more wireless transceivers coupled with the one or more radios and the one or more antennas to facilitate communication with one or more wireless devices, one or more cloud services platforms, or a combination thereof, the communication with the one or more wireless devices being via a first wireless communication protocol and the communication with the one or more cloud services platforms being via a second wireless communication protocol, the second wireless communication protocol being different from the first wireless communication protocol, wherein one of the first and second wireless communication protocols is a local area network protocol, wherein upon execution of the instructions in the memory, the processor detects the user input and performs one or more of: communicate with the one or more cloud services platforms to engage services provided by the one or more cloud services platforms, and control local or remote devices in accordance with a predetermined automation activity. 12 . The smart wall-plate system of claim 11 , wherein the wireless communications interface, when first powered on, actively seeks a Bluetooth connection with a local device pair via the Bluetooth protocol. 13 .
