Methods and systems for simulating light interaction and physical materials in a graphical user interface (GUI) of a resource-constrained device are provided. Simulating physical materials, such as glass and metal, in a GUI can allow a user to feel more natural in interacting with the GUI. The user experience can be further enhanced if the simulated physical materials in the GUI can interact with the device's environment in a manner similar to how the actual physical materials would interact. However, continually polling various sensors can be resource-intensive, especially for resource-constrained mobile devices. Accordingly, a mobile device can intelligently determine whether to begin a reduced detail mode, and then render user interface objects in the reduced detail mode to conserve resources.

1 . (canceled) 2 . A method, comprising: at a computer system that is in communication with a display device and one or more input devices; displaying, via the display device, a user interface element, wherein: the user interface element is a simulated material with an appearance based on a color of the computer system; and the user interface element includes a simulated reflection based on one or more lighting parameters; detecting, via the one or more input devices, a change in a lighting parameter; and in response to detecting the change in the lighting parameter changing, via the display device, an appearance of the user interface element based on the change in the lighting parameter and the color of the computer system. 3 . The method of claim 2 wherein the user interface element includes one or more interactive elements. 4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more interactive elements includes a button. 5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more interactive elements includes content. 6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the change in the lighting parameter is based on ambient lighting conditions. 7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the ambient lighting conditions include a color temperature. 8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the ambient lighting conditions include a time of day. 9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the change in the lighting parameter is based on a change in lighting direction. 10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more input devices include an optical sensor and the change in the lighting parameter is detected using the optical sensor. 11 . The method of claim 2 , the change in the lighting parameter is based on a change in lighting intensity. 12 . the method of claim 2 , wherein the change in the lighting parameter is detected based on movement of the computer system. 13 . A computer system, comprising: one or more processors; memory; and one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: displaying, via a display device, a user interface element, wherein: the user interface element is a simulated material with an appearance based on a color of the computer system; and the user interface element includes a simulated reflection based on one or more lighting parameters; detecting, via one or more input devices, a change in a lighting parameter; and in response to detecting the change in the lighting parameter changing, via the display device, an appearance of the user interface element based on the change in the lighting parameter and the color of the computer system. 14 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions, which when executed by one or more processors of a computer system in communication with a display device and one or more input devices, cause the computer system to perform: displaying, via the display device, a user interface element, wherein: the user interface element is a simulated material with an appearance based on a color of the computer system; and the user interface element includes a simulated reflection based on one or more lighting parameters; detecting, via the one or more input devices, a change in a lighting parameter; and in response to detecting the change in the lighting parameter changing, via the display device, an appearance of the user interface element based on the change in the lighting parameter and the color of the computer system.
