The compound 1,1-dioxido-2,3-dihydrothiophen-3-yl 4-phenoxybenzenesulfonate, pharmaceutical compositions thereof, and use of the compound and the pharmaceutical compositions for treating cancer and pulmonary diseases are disclosed.

1 . The compound 1,1-dioxido-2,3-dihydrothiophen-3-yl 4-phenoxybenzenesulfonate having the structure of Formula (1): or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is (S)-1,1-dioxido-2,3-dihydrothiophen-3-yl 4-phenoxybenzenesulfonate (1a): or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 3 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is (R)-1,1-dioxido-2,3-dihydrothiophen-3-yl 4-phenoxybenzenesulfonate (1b): or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 4 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is the free base. 5 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is the hydrochloric acid salt. 6 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising the compound of claim 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 7 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of claim 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the disease is treated by inhibiting extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and/or extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2. 8 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of claim 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the disease is selected from cancer, an inflammatory disease, an autoimmune disease, or a pulmonary disease. 9 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the pharmaceutical composition of claim 6 , wherein the disease is treated by inhibiting extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and/or extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2. 10 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the pharmaceutical composition of claim 6 , wherein the disease is selected from cancer, an inflammatory disease, an autoimmune disease, or a pulmonary disease. 11 . The compound of claim 2 , wherein the compound is the free base. 12 . The compound of claim 2 , wherein the compound is the hydrochloric acid salt. 13 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising the compound of claim 2 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 14 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of claim 2 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the disease is selected from cancer, an inflammatory disease, an autoimmune disease, or a pulmonary disease. 15 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the pharmaceutical composition of claim 13 , wherein the disease is selected from cancer, an inflammatory disease, an autoimmune disease, or a pulmonary disease. 16 . The compound of claim 3 , wherein the compound is the free base. 17 . The compound of claim 3 , wherein the compound is the hydrochloric acid salt. 18 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising the compound of claim 3 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 19 . A method of treating a disease in a patient comprising administering to a patient in need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of claim 3 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the disease is selected from cancer, an inflammatory disease, an autoimmune disease, or a pulmonary disease. 20 .
