Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical patient support includes a foundation frame, a support top, and a brake system. The foundation frame includes a first column and a second column. The support top is coupled to the first column and the second column for rotation about a top axis extending along the length of the support top. A rail clamp apparatus for clamping onto a rail of the support top is also provided.

First claim

1 . A rail coupler for coupling an accessory to a rail, the accessory rail coupler comprising a bracket including a top wall, a first jaw, and a second jaw, the first and second jaws cooperating with the top wall to define a rail opening sized to receive the rail, and a flap coupled to the first jaw for pivotable movement relative to the first jaw about an axis, wherein one of the second jaw and the flap include a first headed post and the other of the second jaw and the flap are formed to include a first post opening, and the flap is configured to pivot between an open position, wherein the first headed post is withdrawn from the first post opening, and a closed position wherein the first headed post is received in the first post opening. 2 . The rail coupler of claim 1 , wherein the first post opening is formed to include a first section sized to allow the head of the first post to be received in the first post opening and a second section sized to block the headed first post from withdrawing from the first post opening. 3 . The rail coupler of claim 2 , wherein the flap is slidable relative to the bracket along the axis between the closed position, wherein the first headed post is received in the first section of the first opening and the flap is free to pivot relative to the bracket, and a clamped position, wherein the headed bracket is received in the second section of the first post opening and the flap is blocked from pivoting relative to the bracket. 4 . The rail coupler of claim 3 , wherein the first headed post is coupled to the second jaw and the first post opening is formed in the flap. 5 . The rail coupler of claim 4 , wherein the second jaw includes a second headed post and the first opening is formed to include a second post opening, the second headed post configured to be received in the second post opening when the flap is in the closed position, and the second post blocked from being withdrawn from the second post opening when the flap is in the clamped position. 6 . The rail coupler of claim 3 , wherein the flap pivots relative to the bracket between the open position and the closed position about a pivot pin extending along the pivot axis. 7 . The rail coupler of claim 5 , wherein a first center line of the first headed post is spaced a first distance from the pivot pin, a second center line of the second section of the first post opening is spaced a second distance from the pivot pin, and the second distance is smaller than the first distance. 8 . The rail coupler of claim 7 , further comprising an unlocked indicator configured to be displayed when the flap is slid away from the clamped position and a locked indicator configured to be displayed with the flap is slid to the clamped position. 9 . The rail coupler of claim 8 , wherein the pivot pin includes a first portion marked with the unlocked indicator and a second portion marked with the locked indicator. 10 . The rail coupler of claim 8 , wherein the locked indicator is blocked from view when the flap is slid away from the clamped position and the locked indicator is blocked from view when the flap is slid to the clamped position. 11 . The rail coupler of claim 1 , wherein the first post opening is shaped to define a wedge feature and wherein the headed post engages the wedge feature during movement of the flap from the open position to the closed position. 13 . The rail coupler of claim 1 , wherein the opening is shaped to define a protrusion situated between a first section and a second section of the opening and wherein the headed post passes across the protrusion during movement of the flap from the open position to the closed position. 14 . The rail coupler of claim 1 , wherein the rail is quadrilateral in shape in cross section, the bracket is configured to extend around three sides of the rail, and the flap is configured to extend across a fourth side of the rail when the flap is in the closed position such that the rail coupler completely surrounds all four sides of the rail when the flap is in the closed position. 15 . A surgical table comprising the rail and the rail coupler of claim 1 , the surgical table further including a patient support top and means for applying traction to a head of a patient supported on the patient support top. 16 . A surgical table comprising the rail and the rail coupler of claim 1 , the surgical table further including casters, the casters being braked and released electrically, and an emergency manual caster release being coupled to the casters to release the brakes manually if electrical power is lost. 17 . A surgical table comprising the rail and the rail coupler of claim 1 , the surgical table further including a first column, a patient support top, and an H-bracket and pin to couple the patient support top to the first column, the pin and the H-bracket each having a safety feature to prevent inadvertent decoupling of the patient support top therefrom. 18 . The surgical table of claim 17 , further comprising a slidable, floatable coupling member extending from a slot in an end frame member of the patient support top and the slidable, floatable coupling member having a pin receiving bore to receive the pin. 19 . A surgical table comprising the rail and the rail coupler of claim 1 , the surgical table further comprising a foundation frame including a drive shaft and a means for rotation, and a support top coupled to the drive shaft of the foundation frame to rotate with the drive shaft, the support top configured to rotate about a top axis extending along the length of the support top relative to the foundation frame, wherein the means for rotation is configured for an engaged mode so that the support top is driven to be rotated about the top axis, and a disengaged mode so that the support top is free to be manually rotated about the top axis, wherein the means for rotation includes a means for engagement of the drive shaft in the engaged mode. 20 . The rail clamp of claim 1 , wherein the top wall, the first jaw, and the second jaw are formed integrally as a monolithic component.
