Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A substrate is printed with front side and back side markings. The front side when viewed with reflected light includes a first marking printed with a first gradient of a first color with increasing intensity from a first edge of the substrate to a second edge of the substrate. The back side when viewed with reflected light includes a second marking printed with a second gradient of the first color with decreasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate. The first gradient and the second gradient are selected for a combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with a same intensity of the first color at the first edge and the second edge.

What is claimed is: 1 . A substrate having a front side and a back side and being printed with front side markings on the front side and back side markings on the back side, the front side having the front side markings, the front side when viewed with reflected light comprising: a first marking printed with a first gradient of a first color with increasing intensity from a first edge of the substrate to a second edge of the substrate; the back side having the back side markings, the back side when viewed with reflected light comprising: a second marking printed with a second gradient of the first color with decreasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate; and the first gradient and the second gradient being selected for a combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with a same intensity of the first color at the first edge and the second edge. 2 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the first gradient and the second gradient are selected for a combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with the same intensity of the first color between the first edge and the second edge with no visible gradient of intensity in the first color between the first edge and the second edge. 3 . The substrate of claim 2 , wherein the first gradient of the first color of the first marking increases from zero intensity at the first edge to a first maximum intensity at the second edge; and wherein the second gradient of the first color of the second marking decreases from the first maximum intensity at the first edge to zero intensity at the second edge. 4 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the front side markings, when viewed with reflected light on the front side, further comprise: a first symbol printed with a third gradient of a second color with increasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate; and wherein the back side markings, when viewed with reflected light on the back side, further comprise: a second symbol printed with a fourth gradient of the second color with decreasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate; and wherein the third gradient and the fourth gradient are selected for a combination of the first symbol and the second symbol, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with a same intensity of the second color at the first edge and the second edge. 5 . The substrate of claim 4 , wherein the first gradient and the second gradient are selected for the combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with the same intensity of the first color between the first edge and the second edge with no visible gradient of intensity in the first color between the first edge and the second edge; and wherein the third gradient and the fourth gradient are selected for the combination of the first symbol and the second symbol, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with the same intensity of the second color between the first edge and the second edge with no visible gradient of intensity in the second color between the first edge and the second edge. 6 . The substrate of claim 5 , wherein the first gradient of the first color of the first marking increases from zero intensity at the first edge to a first maximum intensity at the second edge; wherein the second gradient of the first color of the second marking decreases from the first maximum intensity at the first edge to zero intensity at the second edge; wherein the third gradient of the second color of the first symbol increases from zero intensity at the first edge to a second maximum intensity at the second edge; and wherein the fourth gradient of the second color of the second symbol decreases from the second maximum intensity at the first edge to zero intensity at the second edge. 7 . The substrate of claim 4 , wherein the first color and the second color are the same color. 8 . A method of printing anti-counterfeit markings on a substrate having front side markings on a front side and back side markings on a back side, the method comprising: printing the front side of the substrate with the front side markings showing a front pattern of reflected symbols and marking when viewed with reflected light, the front pattern containing: a first marking printed with a first gradient of a first color with increasing intensity from a first edge of the substrate to a second edge of the substrate; and printing the back side of the substrate with the back side markings showing a back pattern of reflected symbols and markings when viewed with reflected light, the back pattern containing: a second marking printed with a second gradient of the first color with decreasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate; the first gradient and the second gradient being selected for a combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with a same intensity of the first color at the first edge and the second edge. 9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first gradient and the second gradient are selected for a combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with the same intensity of the first color between the first edge and the second edge with no visible gradient of intensity in the first color between the first edge and the second edge. 10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first gradient of the first color of the first marking increases from zero intensity at the first edge to a first maximum intensity at the second edge; and wherein the second gradient of the first color of the second marking decreases from the first maximum intensity at the first edge to zero intensity at the second edge. 11 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising: printing the front side of the substrate with the front side markings showing the front pattern containing: a first symbol printed with a third gradient of a second color with increasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate; and printing the back side of the substrate with the back side markings showing the back pattern containing: a second symbol printed with a fourth gradient of the second color with decreasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate; wherein the third gradient and the fourth gradient are selected for a combination of the first symbol and the second symbol, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with a same intensity of the second color at the first edge and the second edge. 12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first gradient and the second gradient are selected for the combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with the same intensity of the first color between the first edge and the second edge with no visible gradient of intensity in the first color between the first edge and the second edge; and wherein the third gradient and the fourth gradient are selected for the combination of the first symbol and the second symbol, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with the same intensity of the secon
