Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An adjustable additive cartridge that provides adjustable metering of additive to a base fluid as the base fluid is flowing through the cartridge. A spout is mounted for limited rotation within a base element of the cartridge. Rotation of the spout results in varying degrees of flow of additive into a base fluid flow path through the cartridge. The cartridge may be used with a portable beverage container, such as a sports bottle or off-the-shelf water bottle. The supply of base fluid in a container used with the cartridge may be kept in an unmixed, pure state, and other cartridges, each having different additives (i.e., flavors) may be used interchangeably with the same base fluid supply. The cartridge allows a consumer/user to experience different additives, such as different flavors or supplement compositions, for a given supply of base liquid in a single container. A check valve on the cartridge prevents backflow of the base fluid. An integrated filter for filtering base fluid flowing into the cartridge may be provided. The additive cartridge may be sealed to provide for extended storage and to provide a user/consumer with evidence of integrity, quality and/or tampering prior to purchase and/or use. Visual and tactile indicators of the amount of additive being added to a base fluid may be provided. A container may retain a spare additive adjustable cartridge on the container.

1 .- 15 . (canceled) 16 . A cartridge configured for use with a container for containing base liquid comprising: a cartridge base comprising an annular reservoir for containing additive and a threaded retaining portion for securing the cartridge to a container lid of the container; a spout body comprising a spout and a reservoir opening that provides fluid communication with the annular reservoir, wherein the spout and the reservoir opening are in fluid communication with an exterior space, wherein the annular reservoir holds a material which is released during drinking from the spout; a drinking channel forming a continuous fluid pathway from the container to the exterior space, the drinking channel formed through central axes of the spout and annular reservoir so fluid flows through the annular reservoir to the spout, wherein an inner annular wall of the annular reservoir forms a surface of the drinking channel; and a cap for closing fluid communication between the spout and the exterior space and the reservoir opening and the exterior space. 17 . The cartridge of claim 16 , wherein the threaded retaining portion is formed along a central axis collinear with the central axes of the spout and annular reservoir. 18 . The cartridge of claim 16 , wherein the cap covers the spout. 19 . The cartridge of claim 16 , wherein the drinking channel is formed along a central axis of the threaded retaining portion. 20 . The cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising a filter element adapted to filter liquid which passes through the filter element. 21 . The cartridge of claim 20 , wherein the filter element is positioned underneath the annular reservoir when attached to the container. 22 . The cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising a check valve configured to prevent backflow of base liquid into the container. 23 . The cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising a lower reservoir enclosure positioned upstream from the spout body and configured to at least partially enclose the annular reservoir. 24 . The cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising an adjustment actuator configured to adjust an amount of material released from the annular reservoir. 25 . The cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising the lid, wherein the lid includes an orifice having a one-way valve in fluid communication with the exterior space, and wherein the lid includes a carrying handle. 26 . A method for using a cartridge, the method comprising: providing a cartridge attached to a container containing base liquid, the cartridge having an annular reservoir containing a material; delivering base liquid from the container through a drinking channel formed through central axes of a spout body of the cartridge and the annular reservoir; and delivering the material from the annular reservoir during a time that base liquid is delivered through the spout body. 27 . The method of claim 26 , wherein providing the cartridge includes attaching the cartridge to the container by threading the cartridge onto the container. 28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein threading the cartridge includes rotating the cartridge about a central axis collinear with the central axes of the spout body and annular reservoir. 29 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising covering the spout with a cap. 30 . The method of claim 26 , wherein delivering the base liquid includes delivering the base liquid through the spout body along a central axis of the cartridge. 31 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising filtering liquid delivered through the drinking channel. 32 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the central axis of the annular reservoir is coaxial with the central axis of the spout body. 33 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising preventing backflow of base liquid to the container. 34 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising adjusting an amount of material delivered from the annular reservoir. 35 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising enclosing at least a portion of the annular reservoir with a lid of the container. 36 . A cartridge configured for use with a container for containing base liquid comprising: a cartridge base comprising an annular reservoir for containing additive and a threaded retaining portion for securing the cartridge to a container lid of the container; a spout body comprising a spout and a reservoir opening that provides fluid communication with the annular reservoir, wherein the spout and the reservoir opening are in fluid communication with an exterior space, wherein the annular reservoir is configured to contain a stored material and wherein the reservoir opening is positioned to convey the stored material to a user as the user drinks from the spout; a drinking channel forming a continuous fluid pathway from the container to the exterior space, the drinking channel formed through central axes of the spout and annular reservoir so fluid flows through the annular reservoir to the spout, wherein an inner annular wall of the annular reservoir forms a surface of the drinking channel.
