An electrical connector includes an insulating body and a first terminal module. The insulating body includes a main body and an extension plate. The main body defines a first installation groove. The first terminal module includes a first conductive mounting block, a first terminal assembly and a first cable. The first terminal assembly includes a first insulating block and a number of first conductive terminals provided on the first insulating block. The first terminal module at least partially passes through the first installation groove. The first conductive mounting block, the first insulating block and the extension plate together form at least part of a tongue plate of the electrical connector. The tongue plate is configured to be inserted into a mating slot of a mating connector. An electrical connector assembly having the electrical connector is also disclosed.
