In an embodiment, metal-organic nanowires or nanofibers comprising polymer chains with around 100 or more repeat units are synthesized. The metal-organic nanowires or nanofibers are exposed to a reactive gas at a temperature in excess of around 100° C. and at a pressure in the range from around 0.001 to around 100 atmospheres.

1 . A ceramic nanowire arrangement, comprising: a plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires, each of the plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires comprising (i) oxygen (O) and (ii) aluminum (Al) and/or magnesium (Mg), wherein: at least some of the plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires are present as one or more bundles thereof, each of the one or more bundles having a diameter in a range of about 50 to 200 nm. 2 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires comprises at least one nanowire selected from: Al 2 O 3 nanowires, MgO nanowires, Al—Mg—O nanowires, lithiated Al 2 O 3 nanowires, aluminum oxyhydroxide nanowires, and/or aluminum oxyfluoride nanowires. 3 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires comprises at least one nanowire selected from: oxide nanowires, oxyhydroxide nanowires, nitride nanowires, oxynitride nanowires, fluoride nanowires, and/or oxyfluoride nanowires. 4 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 3 , wherein the at least one nanowire is (1) amorphous or (2) nanocrystalline with an average grain size below about 100 nm. 5 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 , wherein an average aspect ratio of the plurality of ceramic nanowires is greater than about 5. 6 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 5 , wherein the average aspect ratio is greater than about 20. 7 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 6 , wherein the average aspect ratio is in a range of about 40 to about 150. 8 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 , wherein at least one nanowire from the plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires exhibits a length in a range from about 5 μm to about 100 μm. 9 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 , wherein at least one nanowire from the plurality of ceramic-comprising nanowires comprises lithium (Li). 10 . The ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the one or more bundles comprise polymer chains with about 100 or more repeat units. 11 . A ceramic membrane comprising the ceramic nanowire arrangement of claim 1 . 12 . A Li-ion battery, comprising: an anode; a cathode; the ceramic membrane of claim 11 configured as a separator interposed between the anode and the cathode; and an electrolyte impregnating the separator.
