Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A call captioning system for captioning a hearing user's (HU's) voice signal during an ongoing call with an assisted user (AU) includes: an AU communication device with a display screen and a caption service activation feature, and a first processor programmed to, during an ongoing call, receive the HU's voice signal. Prior to activating the caption service via the activation feature, the processor uses an automated speech recognition (ASR) engine to generate HU voice signal captions, detect errors in the HU voice signal captions, use the errors to train the ASR software to the HU's voice signal to increase accuracy of the HU captions generated by the ASR engine; and store the trained ASR engine for subsequent use. Upon activating the caption service during the ongoing call, the processor uses the trained ASR engine to generate HU voice signal captions and present them to the AU via the display screen.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A method for providing captions to an assisted user (AU) communicating with a hearing user (HU) wherein the AU uses an AU communication device and the HU uses an HU communication device and wherein the AU communication device includes a display screen and a processor, the HU communication device receiving an HU voice signal from the HU during a communication session, the method comprising the steps of: (i) receiving the HU voice signal at the AU communication device; (ii) using a first captioning process to generate first captions corresponding to the HU voice signal; (iii) using a second captioning process to generate second captions corresponding to the HU voice signal wherein the second caption process is different than the first captioning process; (iv) presenting the first captions via the AU communication device display screen; (v) tracking a delay between the steps of receiving HU voice signal segments and presenting first captions corresponding to the HU voice signal segments via the AU communication device display; (vi) upon the delay exceeding a threshold duration, for at least a portion of the HU voice signal for which first captions have not been presented via the AU communication device display, automatically presenting the second captions via the AU communication device display screen as fill in captions; and (vii) skipping over the at least a portion of the HU voice signal for which first captions have not been presented; and repeating steps (i) through (vii). 2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the AU communication device processor performs at least the step of using the second captioning process to generate second captions. 3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the second captioning process includes providing the HU voice signal to an automated speech recognition (ASR) engine wherein the engine generates the second captions. 4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the first captioning process includes a call assistant (CA) that generates the first captions. 5 . The method of claim 4 wherein the second captioning process includes providing the HU voice signal to an automated speech recognition (ASR) engine wherein the engine generates the second captions. 6 . The method of claim 5 wherein the AU communication device processor runs the ASR engine. 7 . The method of claim 6 further including the step of transmitting the HU voice signal to a remote relay wherein the CA operates at the relay to generate the first captions. 8 . The method of claim 4 wherein the first captioning process includes a CA that error corrects HU voice signal captions to generate the first captions. 9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the at least a portion of the HU voice signal for which captions have not been presented includes the entire HU voice signal segment for which captions have not been presented. 10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the second captioning process uses the first captions to train to the HU voice signal, the method further including assessing accuracy of the second captions during the communication session and, upon the second captions reaching a threshold accuracy level, providing the second captions via the AU communication device display. 11 . The method of claim 10 further including, upon the second captions reaching the threshold accuracy level, ceasing using the first caption process to generate first captions. 12 . The method of claim 4 wherein the first captioning process includes presenting the first captions on a display screen for correction by the CA. 13 . The method of claim 12 further including comparing the second caption segments to the first caption segments and, in at least some cases where a second caption segment is different than a corresponding first caption segment, visually distinguishing first caption segment that correspond to the second caption segment that is different on the display screen. 14 . The method of claim 13 wherein second caption segments that are different than first caption segments are presented as selectable options for correcting corresponding first caption segments. 15 . The method of claim 1 wherein, prior to the delay exceeding the threshold duration and prior to the first captioning process generating first captions for an HU voice signal segment, the method further includes presenting a graphical representation via the AU communication device display screen indicating the duration of the delay. 16 . The method of claim 15 wherein the graphical representation includes a blank for each perceived word in the HU voice signal that has yet to be captioned via the first captioning process and presented via the display screen. 17 . The method of claim 1 further including presented a catchup input via the AU communication device that is selectable at any time to present the second captions via the AU communication device display screen as fill in captions corresponding to the HU voice signal that occurs during the delay wherein, upon selection of the catchup input, the method skips to step (vii). 18 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of presenting the second captions includes presenting the second captions in a manner which visually distinguishes the second captions from the first captions. 19 . A method for providing captions to an assisted user (AU) communicating with a hearing user (HU) wherein the AU uses an AU communication device and the HU uses an HU communication device and wherein the AU communication device includes a display screen and a processor, the HU communication device receiving an HU voice signal from the HU during a communication session, the method also for use with a captioning relay that is remote from the AU communication device, the method comprising the steps of: (i) receiving the HU voice signal at the relay; (ii) at the relay, using a first captioning process to generate first captions corresponding to the HU voice signal; (iii) using a second captioning process to generate second captions corresponding to the HU voice signal wherein the second caption process is different than the first captioning process; (iv) presenting the first captions via the display screen; (V) using differences between the first captions and the second captions to train the second captioning process thereby generating a trained second captioning process; (vi) assessing accuracy of the trained second captioning process; and (vii) upon the accuracy of the trained second captioning process reaching a threshold level; and (a) storing the trained second captioning process in the AU communication device; (b) using the trained second captioning process to continue to generate second captions; (c) present the second captions generated by the trained second captioning process via the display screen. 20 . A method for providing captions to an assisted user (AU) communicating with a hearing user (HU) wherein the AU uses an AU communication device and the HU uses an HU communication device and wherein the AU communication device includes a display screen and a processor, the HU communication device receiving an HU voice signal from the HU during a communication session, the method comprising the steps of: (i) receiving the HU voice signal at the AU communication device; (ii) using a first captioning process to generate first captions corresponding to the HU voice signal; (iii) presenting the first captions via the AU communication device display screen; (iv) receiving a help command from
