Cards made in accordance with the invention include a specially treated thin decorative layer attached to a thick core layer of metal or ceramic material, where the thin decorative layer is designed to provide selected color(s) and/or selected texture(s) to a surface of the metal cards. Decorative layers for use in practicing the invention include: (a) an anodized metal layer; or (b) a layer of material derived from plant or animal matter (e.g., wood, leather); or (c) an assortment of aggregate binder material (e.g., cement, mortar, epoxies) mixed with laser reactive materials (e.g., finely divided carbon); or (d) a ceramic layer; and (e) a layer of crystal fabric material. The cards may be dual interface smart cards which can be read in a contactless manner and/or via contacts.

1 . A transaction card comprising a monolithic ceramic card body and one or more pockets disposed in the monolithic card body. 2 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the one or more pockets are configured to receive at least one of: a magnetic stripe, a contact or dual interface chip module, a booster antenna, a hologram, a signature panel, or branding. 3 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic monolithic card body comprises one or more compounds of the group consisting of: silicides, nitrides, carbides, borides, oxides, including oxides of zirconia, alumina, beryllia, cerium, and a combination thereof. 4 . The transaction card of claim 3 , wherein the ceramic monolithic card body comprises sintered zirconia dioxide. 5 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising at least one feature selected from the group consisting of: through holes, windows, microtext, and a combination thereof. 6 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising at least one laser-marked feature disposed on the body. 7 . The transaction card of claim 6 , wherein the at least one laser marked feature comprises a decorative design feature. 8 . The transaction card of claim 6 , wherein the at least one laser marked feature comprises a security feature, a laser-applied digitized signature, at least one roughened surface, or a combination thereof. 8 .- 28 . (canceled) 29 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising one or more pigments in the monolithic ceramic card body sufficient to impart a color to the transaction card. 30 . The transaction card of any of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic card body further comprises at least one roughened surface portion, wherein the roughened surface portion (a) comprises at least one feature adhesively connected thereto, or (b) is more receptive to ink or dye than a non-roughened surface portion of the card body and is configured to receive a user's signature. 31 . The transaction card of claim 30 , further comprising a magnetic stripe disposed on a non-roughened surface of the monolithic card body. 32 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising an optical machine-readable representation of data. 33 . The transaction card of claim 32 , wherein the optical machine-readable representation of data comprises a barcode. 34 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic ceramic card body has a dimension of 3.37 inches×2.125 inches×0.03 inches. 35 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic ceramic card body is a product of an injection molding process. 36 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic ceramic card body is a product of machining process comprising machining a block of ceramic larger than the monolithic ceramic card body down to a size of the monolithic ceramic card body. 37 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic ceramic card body is a product of a 3D printing process. 38 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising one or more of a magnetic stripe and a chip module. 39 . The transaction card of claim 38 , wherein the chip module comprises a contact chip module or a dual interface chip module. 40 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising a booster antenna. 41 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising a hologram. 42 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising a signature panel. 43 . The transaction card of claim 1 , further comprising one or more luminophors included in the monolithic ceramic card body. 44 . The transaction card of claim 43 , wherein the one or more luminophors are operable to shift incident light upfield or downfield. 45 . The transaction card of claim 44 , wherein the shift of incident light caused by the one or more luminophors included in the monolithic ceramic card body define an identification marking. 46 . The transaction card of claim 45 , wherein the identification marking is a unique identification marking. 47 . The transaction card of claim 43 , wherein the one or more luminophors comprise phosphors. 48 . The transaction card of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic ceramic card body consists of a single ceramic layer.
