1 .- 40 . (canceled) 41 . An article comprising a tobacco rod and a filter element connected to the tobacco rod, said filter element having an end proximal to the tobacco rod and an end distal from the tobacco rod defining a mouth end of the article, wherein said filter element comprises: a first longitudinally extending section of fibrous filter material proximal to the tobacco rod and a second longitudinally extending section of fibrous filter material distal from the tobacco rod and arranged in an end-to-end configuration with the first section of fibrous filter material, wherein said first section of fibrous filter material comprises a channel extending through said first section of fibrous filter material and having walls defined by the fibrous filter material in which the channel is formed, said channel adapted for passage of mainstream smoke between said tobacco rod and said second section of fibrous filter material. 42 . The article of claim 41 , further comprising a compartment containing a smoke-altering material. 43 . The article of claim 42 , wherein the smoke-altering material comprises an activated carbon material. 44 . The article of claim 41 , wherein one or both of the first and second sections of fibrous filter material comprises a cellulose acetate tow. 45 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the tobacco rod comprises an aerosol forming material. 46 . The article of claim 45 , wherein the aerosol forming material comprises a polyol. 47 . The article of claim 45 , wherein the aerosol forming material is present in an amount of about 10 weight percent to about 50 weight percent, based on the combined dry weight of the aerosol forming material and tobacco material. 48 . The article of claim 45 , wherein the tobacco rod comprises reconstituted tobacco. 49 . The article of claim 48 , wherein the reconstituted tobacco is manufactured using paper-making type or cast sheet type processes. 50 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the article is an aerosol-generating smoking article that does not combust tobacco. 51 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the tobacco rod comprises a smokable filler material and the ends of the tobacco rod are open to expose the smokable filler material, and wherein the filter element and the tobacco rod are axially aligned but do not abut one another.
