What is claimed is: 1 . A valve repair device for repairing a native heart valve of a patient, the valve repair device comprising: a base; a first paddle pivotally connected to the base; a second paddle pivotally connected to the base; a rack and pinion mechanism coupled to the first paddle and the second paddle, wherein the rack and pinion mechanism is configured to move the first paddle and the second paddle between an open position and a closed position. 2 . The valve repair device of claim 1 , wherein the paddles are configured to attach to leaflets of the heart valve. 3 . The valve repair device of claim 1 , further comprising a first gripping member and a second gripping member, wherein the first paddle and the first gripping member are configured to attach to a first leaflet of the heart valve, and wherein the second paddle and the second gripping member are configured to attach to a second leaflet of the heart valve. 4 . The valve repair device of claim 1 , further comprising a spacer disposed between the first paddle and the second paddle. 5 . The valve repair device of claim 1 , wherein the rack and pinion mechanism comprises a first toothed member attached to the first paddle and a second toothed member attached to the second paddle. 6 . The valve repair device of claim 5 , wherein the first toothed member is integrally formed with the first paddle and the second toothed member is integrally formed with the second paddle. 7 . The valve repair device of claim 5 , wherein the rack and pinion mechanism includes a ribbed member coupled to the first toothed member and the second toothed member. 8 . The valve repair device of claim 7 , wherein distal movement of the ribbed member moves at least one of the first paddle and the second paddle toward the closed position and proximal movement of the ribbed member moves at least one of the first paddle and the second paddle toward the open position. 9 . The valve repair device of claim 1 , wherein the rack and pinion mechanism is configured to move the first paddle and the second paddle independently. 10 . The valve repair device of claim 1 , wherein the rack and pinion mechanism is configured to simultaneously move the first paddle and the second paddle between the open position and the closed position. 11 . A valve repair device for repairing a native heart valve of a patient, the valve repair device comprising: a base; a first paddle pivotally connected to the base; a first toothed member attached to the first paddle; a second paddle pivotally connected to the base; a second toothed member attached to the second paddle; a shaft; a ribbed member attached to the shaft; wherein the ribbed member is coupled to the first toothed member and the second toothed member; wherein distal movement of the shaft moves at least one of the first paddle and the second paddle toward a closed position; and wherein proximal movement of the shaft moves at least one of the first paddle and the second paddle toward an open position. 12 . The valve repair device of claim 11 , wherein the first paddle and the second paddle are configured to attach to leaflets of the heart valve. 13 . The valve repair device of claim 11 , further comprising a first gripping member and a second gripping member, wherein the first paddle and the first gripping member are configured to attach to a first leaflet of the heart valve, and wherein the second paddle and the second gripping member are configured to attach to a second leaflet of the heart valve. 14 . The valve repair device of claim 11 , further comprising a spacer disposed between the first paddle and the second paddle. 15 . The valve repair device of claim 11 , wherein the first toothed member is integrally formed with the first paddle and the second toothed member is integrally formed with the second paddle. 16 . The valve repair device of claim 11 , wherein the first toothed member, the second toothed member, and the ribbed member are configured to move the first paddle and the second paddle independently. 17 . The valve repair device of claim 11 , wherein the first toothed member, the second toothed member, and the ribbed member are configured to simultaneously move the first paddle and the second paddle between the open position and the closed position. 18 . A valve repair system for repairing a native heart valve of a patient, the valve repair system comprising: a delivery device having at least one lumen; a valve repair device coupled to the delivery device, the valve repair device comprising: a base; a first paddle pivotally connected to the base; a second paddle pivotally connected to the base; a rack and pinion mechanism coupled to the first paddle and the second paddle; and wherein the rack and pinion mechanism is configured to move the first paddle and the second paddle between an open position and a closed position. 19 . The valve repair system of claim 18 , wherein the paddles are configured to attach to leaflets of the heart valve. 20 . The valve repair system of claim 18 , further comprising a first gripping member and a second gripping member, wherein the first paddle and the first gripping member are configured to attach to a first leaflet of the heart valve, and wherein the second paddle and the second gripping member are configured to attach to a second leaflet of the heart valve.
