Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure relates to methods for making elastomeric laminates that may be used as components of absorbent articles. Aspects of the methods for assembling elastomeric laminates may utilize elastic strands supplied from beams that may be joined with first and second substrates, and may be configured to carry out various types of operations, such as bonding and splicing operations.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A method for making absorbent articles, the method comprising steps of: rotating a pattern roll about an axis of rotation extending axially in a cross direction, the pattern roll comprising pattern elements extending radially outward from the axis of rotation; providing a first roller and a second roller adjacent the first roller to define a nip between the first roller and the second roller; advancing a first substrate and a second substrate through in a machine direction through the nip at a first speed S 1 of at least about 100 meters per minute; providing mandrel cores with at least one elastic strand wound onto each mandrel core; unwinding elastic strands from the mandrel cores; advancing the elastic strands from the mandrel cores; stretching the elastic strands; applying adhesive to at least one of the elastic strands, the first substrate, and the second substrate; advancing the stretched elastic strands between the first substrate and the second substrate at the nip to form an elastomeric laminate; providing a pressing surface adjacent the pattern roll to define a second nip between the pattern roll and the pressing surface, wherein the pressing surface comprises an energy transfer surface of an ultrasonic horn; and intermittently engaging the elastomeric laminate with the pattern elements on the pattern roll. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first substrate comprises a first nonwoven and the second substrate comprises a second nonwoven, and wherein the elastic strands comprise a decitex of less than about 100. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein further comprising a step of spacing the elastic strands apart from each other by about 0.5 mm to about 4 mm. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the elastic strands comprise about 200 to about 1000 elastic strands. 5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pattern elements extend in the cross direction for a length of at least about 100 mm. 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the pattern roll and the pressing surface is heated. 7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of stretching the elastic strands further comprises: rotating the mandrel cores to unwind the elastic strands from the mandrel cores at a second speed S 2 , wherein S 2 is less than S 1 . 8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the elastic strands comprise a spin finish, and further comprising a step of removing a portion of the spin finish.
