A bone stabilizing plate includes two plate portions, each affixable to bones of a patient, the plate portions telescoping together with mating rails and grooves. A limiter associated with one of the plate portions sliding engages one a catch associated with the other of the plate portions, when the plate portions are telescoped together, and resists stops telescoping when the plate portions are telescoped a predetermined distance apart. Once the limiter and catch are engaged, the plate portions enable imposition of a minimum compressive force between bones connected to the plates. The limiter is resiliently positioned to deflect into a relief formed in its respective plate portion. A groove positioned proximate the catch enables free telescoping motion limited by the engagement of the catch and limiter, whereby the minimum compressive force between bones is maintained, and Wolfe's Law may apply.

1 . A device for stabilizing bones of a patient, comprising: a female plate defining a longitudinal axis and a chamber extending along the longitudinal axis, the female plate including: at least one aperture for receiving a bone fastener for attachment to a first vertebral body of the patient; a resilient arm extending around the chamber and laterally to the longitudinal axis; a tooth disposed on the flexible arm and extending into the chamber; a male plate including: at least one aperture for receiving a bone fastener for attachment to a second vertebral body of the patient; a projection sized to be longitudinally received in the chamber; and a catch disposed on the projection to engage the tooth when the chamber receives the projection, the tooth configured to admit passage of the catch when the projection is received in the chamber. 2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the tooth is shaped to prevent the catch from backing out of the chamber once the catch passes the tooth when the projection is received in the chamber. 3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein: the projection includes two oppositely arranged rails; the chamber includes corresponding grooves configured to receive the respective rails. 4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the female plate includes an opening in communication with the chamber, the opening including a plurality of regularly spaced depth indicator indicative of the extent of compression. 5 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the opening exposes at least a portion of a distal end of the projection and a longitudinal position of the distal end of the projection relative to the plurality of depth indicators indicates the extent of compression. 6 . The device of claim 4 , wherein the depth indicators include first and second sets of oppositely positioned depth indicators. 7 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a through hole centrally positioned along the longitudinal axis and in communication with the chamber, the through hole configured to receive a disengagement tool for resiliently bending the resilient arm to disengage the tooth from the catch. 8 . The device of claim 4 , further comprising a through hole centrally positioned along the longitudinal axis and in communication with the chamber, the through hole configured to receive a disengagement tool for resiliently bending the resilient arm to disengage the tooth from the catch. 9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the tooth has a ramped surface on one side and a blocking surface on the other side. 10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the catch includes a blocking surface mateably engageable with the blocking surface of the tooth to prevent telescoping apart of the male plate and the female plate. 11 . The device of claim 10 , wherein when the male plate and the female plate are telescoped together, a compressive force is applied between the first and second vertebral bodies. 12 . A device for stabilizing bones of a patient, comprising: a female plate defining a longitudinal axis and a body defining a chamber extending along the longitudinal axis, the body including: at least one aperture for receiving a bone fastener for attachment to a first vertebral body of the patient; a resilient arm extending laterally to the longitudinal axis from a first end to a second end, the second end being a free end configured to flex relative to the first end; a tooth disposed near the second end of the flexible arm and extending into the chamber; first and second grooves extending longitudinally in the chamber; a male plate including: at least one aperture for receiving a bone fastener for attachment to a second vertebral body of the patient; a projection sized to be longitudinally received in the chamber and having first and second rails corresponding to the respective grooves; and a catch disposed on the projection to engage the tooth when the chamber receives the projection, the second end of the resilient arm configured to flex so as allow the tooth to admit passage of the catch when the projection is received in the chamber. 13 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the tooth is shaped to prevent the projection from backing out of the chamber once the catch passes the tooth when the projection is received in the chamber. 14 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the female plate includes an opening in communication with the chamber, the opening including a plurality of regularly spaced depth indicator indicative of the extent of compression. 15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the opening exposes at least a portion of a distal end of the projection and a longitudinal position of the distal end of the projection relative to the plurality of depth indicators indicates the extent of compression. 16 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the depth indicators include first and second sets of oppositely positioned depth indicators. 17 . The device of claim 12 , further comprising a through hole centrally positioned along the longitudinal axis and in communication with the chamber, the through hole configured to receive a disengagement tool for resiliently bending the resilient arm to disengage the tooth from the catch. 18 . The device of claim 14 , further comprising a through hole centrally positioned along the longitudinal axis and in communication with the chamber, the through hole configured to receive a disengagement tool for resiliently bending the resilient arm to disengage the tooth from the catch. 19 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the tooth has a ramped surface on one side and a blocking surface on the other side. 20 . The device of claim 19 , wherein the catch includes a blocking surface mateably engageable with the blocking surface of the tooth to prevent telescoping apart of the male plate and the female plate.
