Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of creating a feature on a needle. The method comprising the steps of providing a needle having a sharpened distal end for insertion into an insertion site on a subject, a proximal end, and a tubular wall defining an inner diameter and an outer diameter; gripping a distal portion of the needle about the outer diameter; gripping a proximal portion of the needle about an outer diameter; and applying a compressive force between the distal portion and the proximal portion sufficient to effect an outward buckling of the tubular wall, thereby increasing an outer diameter of the tubular wall between the distal portion and the proximal portion.

1 . A needle having a needle feature made by the process of: positioning a cannula having a distal tip, a proximal end and a longitudinal body having a wall having an outer diameter along a longitudinal axis; using at least one gripping member to grip a distal portion and a proximal portion of the needle; applying a compressive force along the longitudinal axis between the distal portion and the proximal portion to cause the outer diameter of the wall between the distal portion and the proximal portion to extend radially from the longitudinal axis to form the needle feature. 2 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the needle feature effects a cannula bump that has a cross dimension different from the rest of the cannula. 3 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the needle feature comprises a symmetrical cannula bump. 4 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the needle feature comprises a asymmetrical cannula bump. 5 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion is gripped by one gripping member and the proximal portion is gripped by another gripping member; and wherein the one and another gripping members move toward each other to apply the compressive force along the longitudinal axis to form the needle feature. 6 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion is gripped by one gripping member and the proximal portion is gripped by another gripping member; and wherein one of the one and another gripping members moves toward the other of the one and another gripping members to apply the compressive force along the longitudinal axis to form the needle feature. 7 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the process further comprises: positioning a form about the outer diameter of the cannula between the distal and proximal portions to configure the needle feature to a desired shape when the compressive force is applied axially between the distal and proximal portions. 8 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the process further comprises: inserting a stylus into the cannula to inhibit the narrowing of an inner diameter of the cannula when the compressive force is applied between the distal and proximal portions. 9 . The needle of claim 1 , wherein the needle feature is formed towards the distal tip of the needle, the proximal end of the needle attached to a distal portion of a needle hub of a catheter insertion device adapted to be used with a catheter assembly having a catheter hub including a distal end to which a catheter extends distally, the needle adapted to slidably extend through the catheter hub and the catheter, a needle tip capture mechanism slidable along the needle proximal the needle feature. 10 . A needle having a needle feature made the process of: providing a needle having a distal end, a proximal end, and a tubular wall defining an inner diameter and an outer diameter; positioning the needle along a longitudinal axis; gripping a distal portion of the needle about the outer diameter; gripping a proximal portion of the needle about the outer diameter; and applying a compressive force along the longitudinal axis between the distal portion and the proximal portion sufficient to effect an outward buckling of the tubular wall to form the needle feature between the distal portion and the proximal portion, the needle feature having a diameter greater than the outer diameter of the tubular wall. 11 . The needle of claim 10 , wherein the compressive force causes at least a portion of the outer diameter of the tubular wall to buckle radially outwardly by at least 0.0001 of an inch. 12 . The needle of claim 10 , wherein the needle feature is an asymmetrical curve resulting from the outward buckling of a cross section of the tubular wall. 13 . The needle of claim 10 , further is formed by positioning a form configured to inhibit expansion of the outer diameter of the tubular wall being buckled beyond a desired shape. 14 . The needle of claim 10 , further is formed by positioning an actuating mechanism proximal to the proximal portion prior to applying the compressive force. 15 . The needle of claim 10 , further is formed by inserting a stylus into the inner diameter of the needle prior to the applying of the compressive force. 16 . A needle having a needle feature manufactured by the process of: positioning a cannula having a distal tip, a proximal end and a longitudinal body having a wall having an outer diameter along a longitudinal axis; using at least one gripping member to grip a distal portion and a proximal portion of the needle; applying a compressive force along the longitudinal axis between the distal portion and the proximal portion to cause the outer diameter of the wall between the distal portion and the proximal portion to extend radially from the longitudinal axis to form a needle feature that has a radial dimension different from the rest of the cannula. 17 . The needle of claim 16 , wherein the at least one gripper comprises a first and a second gripping members, the needle further is manufactured by: gripping the distal portion by one of the first and second gripping members; gripping the proximal portion by other one of the first and second gripping members; and moving the first ans second gripping members toward each other to apply the compressive force along the longitudinal axis to form the needle feature. 18 . The needle of claim 16 , wherein the at least one gripper comprises a first and a second gripping members, the needle further is manufactured by: gripping the distal portion by one of the first and second gripping members; gripping the proximal portion by other one of the first and second gripping members; and moving one of the first and second gripping members toward the other of the first and second gripping members to apply the compressive force along the longitudinal axis to form the needle feature. 19 . The needle of claim 16 , further is manufactured by: positioning a form about the outer diameter of the cannula at the wall between the distal and proximal portions to configure the needle feature to a desired shape when the compressive force is applied axially between the distal and proximal portions. 20 . The needle of claim 16 , wherein the compressive force causes the outer diameter of the wall between the distal portion and the proximal portion to extend radially between about 0.0002 to 0.0004 of an inch.
