1 . A method for immunizing a mammal against a CHIKV, wherein the method comprises administering to the mammal an effective amount of the a composition comprising a purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV). 2 . A method of eliciting a protective immune response in a human against a chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection comprising administering a composition comprising an effective amount of a purified inactivated chikungunya virus. 3 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the administering is via a route selected from intramuscular injection, intradermal injection, subcutaneous injection, intravenous injection, oral, or intranasal. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mammal is a human. 5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the mammal is a human. 6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the administering is via a route selected from intramuscular injection, intradermal injection, subcutaneous injection, intravenous injection, oral, or intranasal. 7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount confers an antibody tier sufficient for broad-based sero-protection against all strains of purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV). 8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the effective amount confers an antibody tier sufficient for broad-based sero-protection against all strains of purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV). 9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the effective amount is about between about 56 and 1,400 ng purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV) per dose. 10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the effective amount is about between about 56 and 1,400 ng purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV) per dose. 11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is the strain AF15561, La Reunion (LR) strain, or strain 181/clone 25 strain. 12 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is the strain AF15561, La Reunion (LR) strain, or strain 181/clone 25 strain. 13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is inactivated by formalin or beta-propriolactone (PBL) treatment. 14 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the purified inactivated chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is inactivated by formalin or beta-propriolactone (PBL) treatment. 15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises an adjuvant. 16 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the composition further comprises an adjuvant.
